Bought new computer

I don't claim to be a psychic,

but I see that I am right!

Don't let yourself be baited into the competitive discussion steamboateng, there's always gonna be a "bigger, better, faster, more" out there. You've spent your money and you are pleased and that's all there is to it!

I have an acquaintance at work that insists on correcting everyone based on his membership with Consumer Reports. I realized early on that he doesn't really CARE is someone he knows buys the highest quality "this or that" or not, he's just trying to inflate his ego and reputation by being the "know it all". Sadly, it serves the opposite purpose.

We all have our reasons for buying what we buy, and some are based on logic, and some on emotion. If you posted to ask what you should buy, I might offer advice, right or wrong, but after the fact I'm just pleased you made a decision and hope it will fulfill your desires.:)

I think it was an earlier link of yours that got me into "dreaming" about such things.

Can you imagine Trainz on a RAID card with 512megs of memory and 5 or more SSD's.

Such a thing brings my mind happy thoughts.

Other than very good initial game loading times I doubt you’d see any benefit to “in-game” performance at all with the SSD’s on real hardware RAID.

As you already mentioned as far as steamboateng’s configuration is concerned the best way to go is to put OS by itself on the smaller capacity SSD and keep all the games on the much larger 1TB mechanical drive.

So are you telling us that it’s better to not do any research on the hardware before you purchase lol?

You’ll have to start differentiating between what is a competitive discussion and what is providing and acknowledging information.

I guess the information provided in a real hardware forum isn’t information sharing at all, just bad ol' competitive discussions, watch out you might learn something, lol -

Exactly, that’s why it helps to know (research) what’s right around corner before you spend a good chunk of change on yesterday’s technology.

That's why I haven't bought an SSD - because they will shortly be yesterday's technology and CHEAP.

SSD’s are far from being “yesterday's technology”, it’s just that SSD technology is improving very rapidly along with growing capacity.

"Higher in capacity and with faster controllers is where it’s going."

I'm sure they are but the latest stuff is always expensive and especially now that the junta at Whitehall has hiked VAT up to 20% I'll be happy to settle for something that's a little out of date as long as it's cheap and it works.

It’s the same old story as far as gaming on the PC is concerned; “you want to play, you've got to pay” and one of the reasons why many have turned to the $200.00 console and PC game sales are in the toilet.

Gentlemen, I thank you all for the spirited discussion. It has been interesting as well as informative. Traizers have always been the best forum folks, imho.
Well, the new rig arrived January 4th. Took a while to unbox it, put it together, and boot-up...............It's a beast! Pulled off side covers and investigated the hardware. The case has 3 huge 230mm fans and a small one also; the NVidia GTX 570 card is a monster, nearly a foot long, 'bout 5" wide and over at least an inch and a half deep; the Noctua cpu cooler is also a monster, with 2 140mm fans for ventilation. Considering this puppy was about 2250 USD, (+ $63 shipping) I think I got a pretty good deal for the quality components and construction.
Needless to say I'm just tickled with it, spending hours and hours each day exploring the mysteries and complexities of the WIN7 64 o.s. Initially reluctant to install too much of my favorite software at one tine, I've grown familiar with the trickery of having an o.s. on the ssd, while installing both playfull and utilitarian 1 'n 0's on the disk drive.
The system has been operating just fine since initial boot-up; I've confirmed the overclock is 3.9 GHz, max temp registered on the cpu to date is about 43 deg. C.
I haven't installed my TRS206, waiting to buy TRS 2009 or 2010 and install on the ssd (saving about 50 Gb for it). I did install MS Flight Simulator X on the disk drive, though, and game performance and graphics was quite impressive. Blender, PSP, SketchUp, etc, all run very well on the disk drive. Thinking about installing TRS 2006 on the disk drive, untill I can get a more recent vesion in hand to installon the ssd.
Thanks again all, for your input.
Regards :)

Good to hear you got it OK. For myself I cured the problems on mine by buying some top dollar RAM and (despite the fact I have a GTX460 GPU) the "Black Texture" problem simply went away.
Take good care of it....

I take it that implies a memory problem, not a graphics card problem. I can't say, as I have no current version of Trainz installed yet. I can say that the only problems I found with the GTX 570 has been with older (5 years +) games showing occasional artifacts or texture tears. But I suspect even that is a problem with game design, not the card.

Got to say I didn't mention that the TRS2009 I am running now is a completely fresh install whereas before with the "Black Texture" thing it was an old install with the GPU installed later. Maybe (gets ready to be shot down!) that was the problem and it doesn't occur if you have a fresh install with an existing GPU? I've just installed TC3 on my second HDD and it is also running well. Next thing is to install another 4GB of RAM. Goodbye bank balance......
PS I also installed FEAR which wouldn't install before.

This is an off-topic question, but I see you own both TRS 2009 & 2010, which do you prefer and why. I want to purchase soon....or maybe wait for next version?

I've only just installed/re-installed both so obviously I've done little with TRS2010 but my impression was that FPS appear to be better in TRS2009. I really don't see the point of SpeedTreez - it looks quite impressive but I'm well aware that Trainz is only a simulation and I don't need moving trees to complete the illusion of reality. I can't help feeling that all that movement must have a cost in terms of FPS.

Makes no difference if they are moving or not to frame rate that I can see, there is a post on here somewhere about how to stop them moving if that bothers people to much, Personally the minimum setting for wind has hardly any movement anyway and that does me.
FPS are better with Speed Trees than with billboards in many cases, probably as the GPU handles the speed tree rendering not the CPU.
FPS here are better than on 2009SP4 and way better than pre SP4.
