Basic question #1: KUIDs (and their format) and moving about in Surveyer

Apologies if these have been asked and answered many times before (I did search the forum but didn't find an answer).

I am really struggling with a number of things that ought to be obvious (or that probably are obvious but seem to escape me). and this is the first:-
  • I see different types of kuids -- kuid and kuid2 -- what is the difference? How woud I search for kuid2 in ContentManager?
  • I sometimes see negative numbers for the first numeric part of a kuid (like kuid:-1:42004201)
  • There is sometimes a third number part (so kuid2:2512:13:1)
Can anyone explain these three points

I am looking at kuid:217096:30027 ("CGR clerestory 1st 3rd compo 1903")which I downloaded but which has the nasty red-splatter icon indicating a problem and which has all these kuid variations

This is with TRS 2009.

Another problem I have comes with Surveyer where I have enormous difficulty with moving around any map I work with -- scrolling either doesn't work or goes at the speed of light and I disappear over the horizon, and rotating goes very fast and I am 'upside down' and cannot easiy get back. I cannot control movement and yet normally I'm reasonably adept with a mouse.

This is probably enough for one post -- thanks for any feedback

David

Kuid numbers go back to UTC and are in the format Kuid:1234:5678, while in TRS2004 the Kuid2 system was introduced using the format Kuid2:1234:5678:0 with the trailing 0 being the issuance or revision number. These two numbers are functionally equivalent in Trainz, except that a bug in CMP which causes the Kuid2:1234:5678:0 number to be read by CMP as Kuid2:1234:5678:127 has caused most creators to use the following sequence:
kuid:1234:5678
kuid2:1234:5678:1
kuid2:1234:5678:2
the last number shown here being the second revision or third version of the item. Kuids with a negative first number like kuid:-1:2345 are by Auran and are built into the game.

You might try going to the Surveyor menu and changing the Compass Speed setting to help with the scrolling. I can't help you with the red splatter as I have not yet bothered to install my TRS2009.

Just a basic glimpse of the KUID numbers:

KUID is the original format for numbering assets. The KUID2 configurations is a newer idea, and could possibly replace the KUID numbering system eventually. To take an example: KUID:1111:123456 is the same (as far as the way Trainz reads it) as Kuid2:1111:123456:1. The 1111 is the unique ID number assigned to each Trainz member. You have a creator's number if you have registered TS2009 (or any other version). The 123456 is the unique number assigned to that specific asset. With the KUID2 numbering system the last 1 after the last : indicates that this is the first iteration of that specific asset. If that last number where a 2, it would mean that that asset has been updated and the 2 is the latest version. Under the old KUID numbering system, if the creator updated the asset, it would have to have a whole new KUID number. Additionally, the 123456 number is broken down to identify what type of asset it is. This configuration is kind of complex and is described fully in the "Content Creator's Guide". I haven't really paid a lot of attention to it, not being a creator, but you can gain more understanding of the system by reading the Guide.

The asset you mentioned, kuid:217096:30027, if it has the red splatter icon, might mean you are missing some dependancies. These are the other assets which the creator used when he created the item. Select the kuid you mentioned in CM2 and then drag-and-drop it to the Download Helper window, and let it search the DLS to see if it needs to DL more assets. I DLed it and my CM2 shows a yellow exclamation point, which means there are only warnings for that asset (involving some obsolete items in the config file), but all dependancies were found on the DLS.

To search for a KUID2 item in CM2, kuid2:2512:14:2 for example, enter "kuid2:2512:14:2" into your search paramaters (minus the quote markes).

The minus numbers are usually older "Built-in" items from prior versions of Trainz and I don't think you can find them on the DLS.

In Surveyor, the compass moves to where your cursor is when you right click. If you're disappearing off the edge of the map, its because thats where your cursor is. Try tipping your view up for more of an overhead view, using the "up" arrow key. Have your cursor exactly where you want to move to, instead of just indication a gereral direction. When you rotate, hold down the shift key, and that will slow the rotation somewhat. It takes some practice. Someone else may know how to adjust the speed of these movements, but thats about all I know.

Hope this helps.

I have no experience of CM2 but if searching the DLS direct be aware that you should only type the 'middle two' bits of the kuid, eg to find say Kuid2:12345:6789:2 search for "12345:6789" (without the quotes)...

Thanks...

Thank you to those who replied. The kuid information helped a lot. For the moving about in Surveyer I will try out the suggestions.

Again many thanks
