Go for it Barry, I for one would be interested, everything that works in TS12 is supposed to work in T2 which would include invisible track, although I think you could actually make canals as track? thats an interesting thought. Plus it looks like we might actually be able to get vertical sided terrain it was more or less hinted.

There used to be L shaped splines for the canal walls and dock walls and I used to use the train tunnels as canal tunnels, also I made horse drawn barges but as I never could make animation in gmax My horses all had very stiff legs, maybe rheumatism;)...however I think I stopped at trainz 2009 but never bothered to register it, so even Trainz 2012 is a different more complex world. Havn't used Trainz for years now.

Thanks Barry

Barry,

I for one would love to see your Blender maritime assets working in Trainz, I was a keen canal boater for years. Unfortunately I can not longer participate actively in the real thing but would love to see canals etc. realistically portrayed in Trainz. One of these days I may get round to making a few basic canal items (locks, moorings etc).

If you do decide to give Trainz another try and would like some assistance with some of the newer features I'm willing to help where I can - within the limited limits of my ability!

Cheers

Chris

Hello Chris you post is interesting. Over 45 years ago now I bought a 21 ft sloop and took it around the coast from rivers Alt, Mersey, into the Ribble and boatyard on the Douglas. Never did get out of the river Ribble and sold it after a year or so. That is probably what got me interested in boats.

At present only using Blender Game Engine. Made similar to the routes I made in Trainz as regards the layout Ellemere Port canal complex , Liverpool Docks c1800 and 1833 and other bits of the coast up to 12 mile. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal ends next the docks and included about half a mile of it. However Blender Game Enigine has it's limitations but can make terrain up to about 12 mile using displace function. Should anybody wish to use the Blender Game Engine for moveable (animated) but not driveable boats could give some help, also animated locks using the timeline. Boats can be animated to maneovre through docks, etc.

Never got very far with Trainz although I included mile or so of the Leeds to liverpool Canal and docks plus Ellesmere Port canal complex didn't seem realistic enough. I think I had 10 or so routes on Download station 2004 trainz and various basic barges, etc, horse drawn, Liverpool Docks, etc of various years. Trainz for me seems to have ever increasing complexity and Blender Game Engine nice and easy.

Thanks

Barry

P.S. I may make a new website and put basic Blender Game Engine Tutorial back on c1800 and very mini screenshots to keep bandwidth down.

New Site made. Will reduce screenshot sizes on Blender Game Engine BASIC Tutorial and add it back to site. Incidentally although about the Blender Game Engine it uses Blender blend files which can also be adapted for Trainz, or converted to other file types for other simulators. I think the links work OK. Barry. Some mini screenshots may be fuzzy as quality slider used to reduce file size

See new thread about Blender 3D and Blender Game Engine Tutorial

Barry,

Had a quick look at your new site - I'm sure you models can be reproduced in Trainz, with no problem if you decide to give it a go again. The recent 'complications' with Trainz are not as bad as you might think, in my view the worst thing about them is the almost total lack of good documentation explaining them. Might be worth trying out a trial mesh or two from your existing Blender models just to see how it goes, if you like I'm willing to try the conversions for you (the copyright would of course remain yours).

I know the Leeds & Liverpool very well - I kept my boat in the basin at Apperley Bridge and later at Kildwick :

Above, rural moorings at Kildwick.

I travelled the L&L many times but always turned left at Wigan - in my days the section to Liverpool was a bit of a 'no go' area, completely 'Yuppified' now of course.

I think Barry has a couple of barges on the DLS I may have one or two as well. I think the big issue is textures so if you have some photos lying around I could probably drop a few barges out. Vulcan has something in the way of operating locks I think.

At present I don't have a copy of Trainz as havn't used it for a few years now. What would be good is the scenery designer of Trainz and the ease of making animation in Blender. The canal world could have a simulator world of it's own as it passes by numerous small villages and through towns, plus they are linked into the river systems as on the river Douglas. Era could be horse drawn and or motorised with industries, inns, windmills and everything else.

Will see what happens when the next version comes out and even discussing the canal and coastal world gives me a bit more interest in working with Blender. Have walked along the canal up to about Melling and several photos of the canal banks, etc but don't know any of the other areas or Kildwick.

The wood swing bridges seem to be mainly all metal now. I have a lot more to add to my site over a period of time. The tutorials are fairly basic but explains how to set up tides in Blender etc.

John

Nice to see a discussion about the canal and coastal world in Trainz again and to talk to people who have an interest in it.

Thanks. Barry

Added details of Ellesmere Port and the locks of c1800 also some screenshots my site. This refers to the Blender Game Engine but later versions of the canal complex of Ellesmere Port and Liverpool docks c1910 I think were in my routes on the Trainz Download Station c2004. Whether they still function or not or downloadable I have no idea. Some on the content I made in Blender 8 or 10 years ago still loads OK into the latest Blender including my Conway Castle, and work fine in Blender 3D. Barry
