Australian screenshots

Hahaha Patchy.

I was ensured that my stuff would be transfered from my old laptop to my new one. Everything was, except Trainz. And now the Download station is wierd. I'm afraid its because of this new garbage that Auran has brought in about stopping use of downloading for older versions of trainz...

G'day,
Long time since I've posted on here! Thought I'd show you some of my latest WIP. It's called, Minerail, say the word 'mineral' and you can probably see what I was aiming at. A route with an iron ore mine, two coal tipples, two power stations and a steel mill. It looks a bit.... well.... undercooked so far. Done in TS2009 with mostly built-in items, as to help those wanting to download it off the DLS in future, if it IS finished. It'd be my first DLS upload, but not my last!:)

This is the loco depot, still needing much work. Going to be sitting in the centre of a large town.

mitch456yui201003050001.jpg

Steel mill, with iron ore and coal unloaders, still, work needs doing.

mitch456yui201003050002.jpg

This is the first end of my route, basicly. Looks dodgy, but will get there, I hope.

mitch456yui201003050003.jpg

On our way to the first tipple. This shows how quickly it was built, in one night.

mitch456yui201003050004.jpg

First tipple, complete with yard, annnndd... not much else.

mitch456yui201003050005.jpg

The line twists and turns to the setup of the second tipple. Hopefully the landscape will look more real in the future.

mitch456yui201003050006.jpg

More twistyness as we make our way to.....

mitch456yui201003050007.jpg

The other end! This is the iron ore end with the other powerstation, the flat area will hopefully have a large town, like the other end.

That's about it everyone.
Hopefully people will be brave, stupid or just nice enough to download this when its finished. Doesn't look very scenic now, but, oohhh you just wait...;)
Cyas all later then, I have to get back to building this and enjoying axe1970's route, Sandy River to Bongo Creek!
Mitch

Thanks for the comments Mitch & X46 :) You have inspired me to post a couple more screenies.

BTW: Mitch. Love the route you are building. There is something about a newly untextured baseboard. I love 'em :)

ok, I'm after advice here

apparently auran are going to cease support for a lot of the old versions in September this year. That probably means the older forums will go and old content will fall of the edge of the baseboard so to speak. Bigger dls would have been nice.
I have tried 2006( must be crap support ceases same time as 04 september this year) and it is/was crap, never worked. I have an unopened 2009(support ceases 2014) because it was buggy is it better now? does it update to the latest patch automatically?
whats 2010 like, am I better of cutting my losses and throwing out the previous versions

What would stop me from modeling the same type of models in 2010, that I currently do in 2004 (I'm not into LOD's, just want to do basic models with basic extras like fans wipers loads etc.

could I still use gmax or change to 3ds?

I know this is not a screenshot post but wanted local, no bulldust feed back. I like aussie frankness.

cheers

Not sure about how to correctly answer your questions pete, but some are suggesting in other threads to continue to create in 2004. Then upload to 2010 and correct any errors, change the version number and now the item is a 2010 item and can be uploaded to the download station.

Maybe this can be an answer for people such as your self who do not wish to go through the whole learning circle again. Why would some when there content is first class in the 2004 created way anyway.

I would not see this way as a problem for many including you whose content is some of the best around.

Just a thought, may be others with more "creation" knowledge can add further to this thought.

Yes it auto patches but it takes forever about 6 hours in my Case (including all my content). Service pack 3 has just been relased = in your case you better installing the 2009 than the service patches - then inport your content.

Whats 2010 like, am I better of cutting my losses and throwing out the previous versions.

The Graphics engine is very slick, it handles alphas alot better than 2009 can, I like the look of it. The speed trees, well there a bit strange at first.

Nothing at all mate, I kid you not.

NO Gmax is fine,

All of what you do now works fine in 2009/2010 capablity mode until Auran drops this there is no need to change your work flow at all.

What are you doing for lunch On Tuesday - will be in the Capital and can show you 09 and or 10 on my lappie.

He's right - if you make it a native 2009/2010 asset, then the config file is a little bit different than in 2004, but no changes are needed in the model*

*with two exceptions:
- 2009/2010 don't like it if you have a texture in an unsupported slot, whereas earlier versions just ignored it.
- If you use an alpha channels to cut out your windows, you can get some alpha sorting issues. Better to use separate planes and textures for windows.

Yep, GMAX is fine. While I've been trying to move to Blender, I'm having trouble leaving the comfort of GMAX - despite GMAX's random crashes and inconsistent performance on Vista / Win 7.

I am still using Gmax for TS2009 and run in compatibility mode, no real problems. I have just learned how to do specular textures in Gmax (thanks to Zec showing the way), so I see no reason to have the hassles of re-learning the whole shebang.

Bill.

 Hi Pete
RE : What would stop me from modeling the same type of models in 2010, that I currently do in 2004 (I'm not into LOD's, just want to do basic models with basic extras like fans wipers loads etc.

You dont realy need to use a lod I dont and my GMAX models work fine without screwing around the framrates.

RE : whats 2010 like, am I better of cutting my losses and throwing out the previous versions.

I have found 2009 latest build and 2010 latest build to be very stable in both Native and Compatibility mode, but thats just me.

The book is australian diesel scene, it makes reference to several train conisist and loco useage on them i can copy out the consists if you like and email them pete.

cheers

ghosty

that would be great thanks ghosty,

This loco will be released, as Daniel sent me a totally reworked skin, both will be credited in the config. I'm going to add a couple of external views. Sadly it is not possible to easily place to different cabs on this model.

As is always the case, some things are difficult to model and because of the size of the skin and size of the actual mesh in real life, on the outside of the grills down each side a lot of detail is lost. I have tried to make them as accurate as possible.

cheers

Pete
