Auran's SD40 locomotive odd enginesounds.

I remember hearing that same full throttle sound on an episode of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue from back when I was a kid (this was before Trainz came out in 2001) and that sound is so generic. It would be nice to know if any of these generic default Auran sounds came from.

Here is video footage of an actual BN SD40-2 locomotive by GM/EMD. You hear the bass grunt of the engine followed by a turbo whine as she passes. The turbo is subtle on this real engine but is real loud on the Auran engine sounds. There is no bass note that I can hear on Auran enginesounds.

I always thought that sound was similar to a vacuum cleaner and is similar to the sound found in the earlier products. The problem is the sound was recorded poorly and lost the bass or mid-tones. I heard the same sound when watching a video on YouTube dating to around the same timeframe which makes me wonder if it was the result of the data compressions at the time on consumer-grade recording equipment and the cameras used back then. Keep in mind, we've come a long way with technology since then. Just think about the CPUs, GPUs and memory we have today compared to even a few years ago.
