Assets and Dependencies - Short guidelines

I battle to find my way amongst all the threads about this subject, and on top of that CM is getting more and more tricky as I try to learn and DL stuff.
Can someone please make a list like like beneath or similar, if it is feasable, and please don't think I am unthankfull for all the tutorials and stuff which are available, but I think there might be more guys like me who battle ( I hope - otherwise it means I am the dumbest guy on trainz and If I am, at least I am on the map)
My CM in TR06 has been hanging for days telling me to wait, it is updating...

proposed list ( the contents are just for example ) :

Broken dependencies or assets - Delete them
Missing dependencies or assets - see the tutorials and ask - there is no short cut
obsolete stuff - delete them
Stuff with red exclamation marks and crosses - delete them
Stuff with yellow exclamation marks - do this and that

Geez guys, give us oldtimers a break...:'(

Hi Shane,

I have read them, and it has helped me a lot up to now, but I have an in between need for even more simpler terms and explanations to help me , particularly in CM which frustrates a person to such an extent that you feel like giving up....
I will go and look again, maybe I missed the basics thanks Shane. I looked today but must have missed the cm guides you metion.

I must have missed it previously Shane, it is as you say simple, but if you look at some icons, it tells me nicely what it means, but you do not mention what I must do about it

When it comes to trainz hardware or internal. I don't think anybody beats Shane to the punch:hehe:. What I am worrying about is when the next trainz 12 patch comes out how will cm be effected? And will things still be usable in future trainz?

Hi Jan,

The information about each part is under seperate links, but I am looking to integrate it better.

For example, the yellow !, the yellow ?, and the red ! and ? icons are covered under Missing Dependencies and Faulty Assets.

Shane

That remains to be seen, as far as I'm concerned.

I can usually gauge what changes may be the case using the fix lists (both on the Service Packs page and the TrainzOnline Wiki).

What I am also doing now to help myself is copying ( hope I may ? ) from your tutorials to my PC so I have the stuff I battle with closer at hand.
I do notice that the yellow script is difficult to see in your tutorials Shane and I missed some info in the beginning that I only see now ( old age ) .Perhaps change the colour ?

I can do, but it may take a few minutes to do.

You will probably find it best to have a copy of the tutorials (or links to them) to assist. My blog also has a few as well.

Here's what I do in CM regarding assets. I differentiate DLS/Built-In assets from Modified assets.

* Locally Modified, Faulty: Check errors and attempt to correct. If cannot correct errors (i.e., mesh errors), delete.
* DLS, Faulty: Delete
* DLS, Faulty Dependencies: Delete
* Locally Modified/DLS, Missing Dependencies: Search for missing dependencies. If dependency location is unknown, check for newer KUID2 on DLS under author's KUID. If no version of dependency exists on DLS, delete the dependent asset.
* DLS/Built-In, Obsolete: Check latest version. If locally-modified, delete the newer version; otherwise, delete the obsolete version (DLS) or leave it alone (Built-In).
* DLS/Built-In, Out of Date: Find and download latest version.
* DLS/Built-In, Locally-Modified Dependencies: If dependent asset is used in multiplayer, revert modifications or delete and re-download dependencies from DLS.

If any combination of processes stimulates an infinite loop, I terminate the loop in such a way that nothing is faulty, obsolete, or missing dependencies. Example: Station Exeter is built-in TS2010, available update from DLS has mesh errors.

It's OK - to be honest, I prefer the new colour scheme on my site.

Shane

EDIT: If you want to print any of my tutorials, use the Printer Friendly Version link on the left of the page.
