Any DLS Search Tips?

Hey folks.

I've been browsing the locomotive section on the DLS looking for, well, anything interesting. The trouble is that there are over 9000 entries and sorting options are limited, so if something you might like is stuck in the middle of the list the chances of coming across it by chance are very small.

One thing do I use is the country filter, which sometimes surfaces a locomotive I probably wouldn't have found on my own. Still, I wish I could somehow find, say, the download everybody _had_ to have in 2005. Being able to sort by download count would be nice, though I realize that would put the older content at an advantage since it's been around longer.

Anyway, anyone have any tips for when you aren't after anything in particular but just looking around?

Thanks,

Rob.

I was going to suggest that you visit OBO's Trainz Catalogue, then I read your signature and . . . . . you are OBO!!!!

Heh, yeah. I'm looking for locomotives to add to the catalog, so it isn't a very useful reference for me!

Here's one example of a "hidden classic", the F7A Hot Rod:

http://trainz.banal.net/catalog/pages/Fictional-Locomotives.html

I think Auran used it in its promotional material for Trainz back in the early days but I'd completely forgotten about it until somebody reminded me in a chat room. Judging by the number of views its a popular entry in the catalog and I probably would never have found it on my own.

Oddly, that's the only thing I've ever downloaded from the DLS. I've also never run it. Must have done it years ago when the DLS wasn't such a beast.

OBO

Visit http://www.trainzone.co.nz and browse through the Free Downloads section. Quite a wide range of locomotives that may be of interest.

Peter

. . . . and if we listen to our friends on other sections of the forum, many of the European sites have heaps of stuff that doesn't appear on the DLS. I'd like to think that the bulk of the European sites are listed in the Directory, but I'll bet there are many I've missed.

BTW, Your site is excellent OBO. It would be great if you could join the WebRing. We need more sites like yours to join the ring.

Good Luck!

Hi Peter. Yes I've spent a fair amount of time on trainzone and have 14 Ffestiniog locomotives listed that I found there. I was looking at adding some New Zealand stock next but so far I've been unable to find a suitable route for them that doesn't have payware dependencies. I'll figure something out eventually.

Regards,

Rob.

There are more there than just the Festiniog locos, I thought you were looking for locos to add to your Catalog.

Peter: Just assuring you I hadn't been ignoring the site, that's all.

John: I'll check out the web ring.

Rob.

I don't want to take over the thread but maybe other web site owners are also reading it. Obo, the previous webring sent about 40,000 visitors to member sites. This one is very new, but of the 10 sites listed, they're sharing about 800 hits between them a month. It may not sound a lot, but it means that around 800 people visiting those sites are using the webring. If we had a hundred member sites, the number won't be 8,000, it will be more like 20,000. One person told me that half his visitors come from the directory and the webring.

Akin to browing through the entire Library of Congress...man there are alot of books...you have to set a particular interest. Such as SG or NG, Old or New loco's, Freight or Passenger, Mainline or Branchline, Steam, Diesel, or Electric...you have to pinpoint a particular interest.

If you wanted a U50C, or a Gas Turbine Veranda I would be able to tell you exactly where to get them. Bdaneal site: has the best old time steam loco's that I have ever operated.

Cascade:

I like the LoC analogy. To continue with it: I'm interested in any and all books but I'm calling on your expertise to point out those you think are worth checking out, your personal favorites, the ones you think are of note for whatever reason.

I have a U50C listed and I see there's a gas turbine on the DLS but it does not have verandas - you say you know where to find that?

Ben Neal's site is indeed a fine one. I have a number (though not all) of his creations listed.

Rob.

Downloading Amtrack Genesis Loco

Hi, I tried to download the Amtrak Genesis Locomotives from DLS into Trainz 2006. They seemed to have downloaded properly, but for some reason they won't show up in game. Can anyone help me with this?

These are the one I tried to download.

You should try reposting this question in a new thread as it got kind of lost at the end of this one. Maybe in the TRS2006 section?

Rob.
