Abt Rack & Pinion track

I don't know of any Abt system layouts on the DLS, but I think I've seen some track on the DLS. Pike's Peak uses the Abt system on grades up to 25%. Here are some pictures. http://www.msgroup.org/Colorado3.htm
And their own home page... http://www.cograilway.com/default.asp
Just for fun, here's a video of an Abt line in Tasmania. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIR_54G628I You can hear the sound of the cog on the rack. Here's a picture of the Tasmanian locomotive. http://www.users.bigpond.com/Rhol/page14.html
Another Abt line is the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Wales. It's the only rack line in Britain. http://www.worldrailfans.org/Articles/Europe/UKSnowdon.shtml
Japan has the Ikawa Line with an Abt rack on the 9% section.
Or you can build your own. Here's a brass model with a working rack drive for only $3000. http://www.reynaulds.com/micrometakit.html

hi Claude,

Thanx a lot for the immediate reply giving such a wealth of information on Abt Rack and Pinion system. You have so much of info on any thing related to Railways, any one can get guidance from u at any time !!

Keep it up !!

Cheers

Actually, I just have a Yahoo toolbar. I can do a search in mid-thought and find all kinds of toys.
I had fun looking up all the trains. I never knew there was a train going up Pike's Peak.

The Abt rack system (along with most other ones) was used in Germany too. Rack railroads were relatively common in Germany until the 1930's, whereupon locomotives powerful enough that they could go up the grades without the use of rack's. Since then most rack railroads have had their rack rails removed, or the lines themselves have been abandoned.

To my knowledge there is only one standard gauge railroad in Germany that still has a rack system (which one though I can't remember), it is no longer used for regular traffic, but is instead a preserved railroad.

Hi there

Only ever seen 2 layots .....

There was a small sample line of abt Track, think paul Trainz released it, he also has payware locos and stock as well.

The 2nd was a european/ swiss one, can't remember what it was called or where I got it, All I can remember is i had trouble getting all the missing assets, and it was a shame cause it was a nice looking layot, think it was 600mm but could be wrong

Tried looking through my Cd's, geting so hard, tired to sort them as I went, wish I had done a better job now.

Sorry I can't be more help

Tom

Thanks for the different replies.

In DLS I could find only one item related to this by " barn700 "
Kuid:177548:10003. It is an ABT Rack Track.

Is any one aware of a loco that could be used on such a track - available in DLS or as Freeware ?
