A tribute to TPR's Tehachapi Route

I used to be a member at the La Mesa Model Railroad club in San Diego, California. We modeled the Tehachpi line from Bakersfield to Mojave (altought we only got as far as Cliff before I moved.
 
Great route. It was built for UTC so it will run fine on any PC these days. Be aware that there are a few spots on the Bakersfield end that the track splines need to be rejoined and the switch stands need to be rotated to get them on the correct side of the track in a few places. This is a common issue with pre-TRS routes.

Is it legal to fix it and re-release it for TRS 2004?

Hi Rick,

I've heard rumors about an updated version coming from TPR but who knows. We are starting to see new routes from them again and the Clinchfield was redone and released about a month ago. You would need their permission to release a updated version.

I just downloaded this route last night and I've had a ball running loooooong freights over it. In Cab Mode this route really delivers a nice realistic "feel" to driving. Well done!

I do have a question about this layout to those of you familiar with US signalling practice and it is this:

When I'm sitting in the cab driving along on the main line of this layout, I periodically find a dwarf signal pointing at me. This seems to happen mostly in double track areas or where very long loops seem like double track.

In most systems around the world, dwarf signals (and their semaphore equivalent) are only used for sidings and yards and only appear on a main line to control a reverse movement. Thus it is not possible to encounter a dwarf signal under normal main line running. I might have assumed that the creator put these dwarf signals down by mistake instead of "full" signals except that I encountered the same thing in the Clinchfield layout. This makes me wonder if this is a standard practice in the US.

I surmise, the dwarf signals are to provide protection to sidings...there is a difference between Intermediate signals, that allow movement even when red, and Absolute Signals, that do not permit movement.

With different routes, it's a crap shoot, as to whether signaling is done properly. Basically, the more the better, because even on the Tehachapi Route, an Advanced Approach Signal Aspect(yellow over red or yellow), can slow a train to Approach Speed(less than 30mph in this case), or Restricted Speed(less than 15mph).

I set up 91 tank cars(7 sets of 13 "Tank-Train style"), loaded in UP Bakersfield, and same mty in Mojave, with a BNSF Autorack train in the Bakersfield yard, and run the eastbound loaded Tank Train.

I let the autorack pass the loaded train, under priority 1, give the loaded TT priority 2, and the mty TT priority 3.

The three trains don't give each other trouble, however AI knows no length, and it's my responsibility to make sure the meets, correspond with siding length...I could shorten the train, but that would make it too easy!

ProtoClinch, is a switching route, Tehachapi Route, is a "long runner."

All AI, and me...even though my hotshot had to wait...
