A Community Tragedy

Hey guys
Just a little note. A new fire started at Upwey/Tecoma/Belgrave South... It's about 2KM south of me, headed SW at the moment. Bottom of the valley from me! :(

I may, or may not, be evacuating. If it turns, we will be, if not, well we won't be... I will post a reply when I can. Here's hoping it can be bought under control ASAP!

Hey Zec - I just spent all day waiting for the bad day Warby was supposed to have. Thankfully it didn't happen as forecast. Seriously mate - if it's headed away from you let it be, if it turns around gtf outa there.....

Andy ;)

hey guys :)

The fire has been bought under control now... We spent half the night at a mates place, then from midnight till about 7am at the fire refuge center...

Everything appears to be fine here, so that is good... Might also end up on ABC2 this morning... My mum was interviewed with our dog on her knee, all wrapped up in a blanket. I then got a hot chocolate :P

That is great news Zec. I had feared you may be in the way of the fires yesterday and was looking for you on Yahoo all day.

It was a good you all moved before the fires came any closer. With the recent events and all the precautions people can take, its now time for "better be safe then sorry".

Well good news guys, lets hope this tragedy is now under control, and the powers that be see the light of their errors, and doesnt happen again.

I hope there will be a Royal Commission (or the equivalent these days) to make better guidelines and rules for the future, remember you are living in a fragile land, and so easy to destroy.

I think there are still fires out of control in areas and the current weather is not helping at all. Yesterday (Aussie time) two firefighters where hurt, a fire truck and a house where destroyed near the edge of Melbourne Suburbs. From my local area in Southern NSW they are sending a truck with 3 fire crews for night shifts to help out and one from another close area command.

There is also a Royal Commission underway, and I am sure they will look at all aspects of our recent fires, including the way we build homes in such areas and the materials used. We must learn from this recent disaster.

DSE currently lists eight fires as 'Going' which pretty much means out of control. At least two of these fires are 'complexes' of many fires. In addition to that another dozen are 'Contained' (surrounded by some kind of control line) but not controlled (in other words likely to break the control lines). Tuesday and Wednesday weather is Ok, Thursday will be bad and Friday is shaping up to be 'orrible, though nowhere near as bad as the Saturday that started it all....

You are quite right Craig, we must learn from this, or it will repeat itself, just like night follows day.

Maybe we have to look at double glazing. Maybe better fire resistant material on the outer face of homes. Maybe a concrete bunker, or deep cellar under each house, and well ventilated with air not drawn from the surface until the danger has passed.

The people responsible for the rebuilding must do it right. It might cost more, but what value can you place on your loved ones?

The fires from Daylesford were too near to me last night. We noticed a lot of embers landing on our property, thankfully not alight. That meant they travelled quite some distance.

The people of Victoria cannot insulate themselves from the danger of bushfires. But we must do the best to prevent the loss of life. Unfortunately, we live in one of the most dangerous places as far as bushfires go.

Pete

Just to let you know (most probably do) that on Friday in most parts of Victoria that it is expected to be around 38-41°C.

It is now 26 days since this nightmare started and it is with a huge sigh of relief that I report that the fire complex which has burned out of control for all that time a very short distance from my home is today officially listed as 'Contained'. That does not mean that the fire is out, but there is now a control line all the way around it.

I suffered no loss so I am luckier than very many others, but during those three and a bit weeks we were told to expect the worst on four different occasions and my wife has had the 'must-be-saved' stuff permanently packed in her car. When it comes right down to it, it is surprising how little there is that MUST be taken. She has evacuated to family four times and I have honestly lost count of how often I have rolled out the hoses.

There are still three major fire complexes listed as 'Going' (out of control) but given the weather - we are enjoying the first serious rain in months - they should all be contained shortly.

For me at least, life returns to normal. I grieve for those to whom 'normal' will never return.

Andy ...

That is good news Andy and I am sure everyone there can now see some form of end to the recent fires in your area. I heard there was a little bit of rain in the area and while not enough to put out a fire, it at least helped and reduced the threat of the fires. I also heard the wind has not been as damaging as some thought with the fires. Even though there was some wind damage to trees etc in Melbourne I have not heard of any serious threat with the fires.

I have been talking a little with Zec and his family is ready to move in a minutes notice. Now hopefully everyone can think of unpacking there cars and start getting back to "normal", that would be a huge load off everyone's shoulders.

The only way to fight a wildfire is with fire itself! If you can, burn away all the fuel around your place so the fire will not have anything to feed on. I was a firefighter in the forests of the american northwest, and this is the only sure defense!

Same here Ed. Some of the "parts" found where not human, and some where of the same person :'( ........... though they are saying that they may never be able to "formally" identify everyone.

Rather sad for the families, but an indication of what happened around there :(

There is no greater pain to bare than the loss of home and loved ones.
God give strengh to those victims of this tragedy, that they may endure.
God Bless.

I know this Feeling...

I live in Colorado, but Here, Fires have been VERY BAD. :(

If you combine together all of the Fires that have happened around my Old Mountain Home in Bailey, Co... My House was within a TEN MILE Radius of EVERY one of, what, 3, Maybe 4 Fires in the 2000-2002 Time Span, and We've only Evacuated once... When I was in Elementary School, I remember being Evacuated outside to Buses to go home, and the Sky was ORANGE, as Usual when that Happens, and the Sun was so obscured with Smoke, You COULD Look right at it...:eek::eek:

Even after I moved down to Lakewood, Closer to Denver but Still with the Mountains in View, We Had a Fire RIGHT Before I started my Freshman Year in High School on "Green Mountain", a Large Hill RIGHT Across from the High School, but on the Opposite Side. Pretty Dang Scary...

I Know What Many Aussies are Feeling Right now, and I can tell you, It SUCKS when You're 6-7 Years old, and have to Have to Evacuate your Home, with all of the Trains from your Rudimentary HO Layout Still there... :'(

So, out of Many People here, Besides Aussies, I've had the Most Trouble with Big Ass Forest Fires... It's Damn Scary...

And Many Prayers to all those Good Hearted People down Under... :(
