A Community Tragedy

No words ....

Wow, doesn't this just speak for itself. This is very unfortant. I'm very sorry to everyone over there. This really shows how, everyone can work together, the caring of local firefighters. Support your local firefighters. Once again I'm very sorry for our Australian friends.

That Koala went through 3 of those bottles of water, he has damage to his paws and is now receiving great care. So many of our native animals have also been killed by these fires.

I believe he is a she. Koala bears don't usually drink (don't think so anyway), so that shows just how thirsty it was. (EDIT: Confirmed, the Koala is a she, and it seems as though pets had a go at looking after her.)

Arson suspects arrested (slightly updated from when originally posted 5 hours ago)

If this act is true, all I have to say that is beyond belief & words. (the first paragraph)

Their was too much "fuel" for fires to get out of control. Part of the trouble is that in a lot of cases (if not most) authorities are prevented from land clearing, or back burning in cooler months because of environmentalists. (A party needs the Green's preferences)

'Koala Man' Dave Tree woke up this morning to find he'd made front-page news across the globe.

NBC, Fox, CNN, even Ellen Degeneres have been on the phone, propelling Dave into the spotlight.

Unfortunately nobody appears to have asked the relevant question 'when was this video filmed?'

The video of the Mirboo North resident stroking a singed koala was actually taken in the week leading up to the deadliest bushfires in Australian history, during preventative backburning operations.

The video shows Dave feeding water from a bottle to the koala, now universally known as 'Sam'. The wounded animal also rests its paw on Dave's hand.

Now Dave has become a household name from London to Los Angeles, but he says all the media interest has taken its toll.

"I think it happened about a week and a half ago, but you'll have to bear with me – I'm losing track of the days.

"I've had all these phone calls for interviews, I've lost contact. I can't get my head around it. I don't think it's finished yet.

"But if Oprah Winfrey called and wanted me to come over to be on her show, I'd have to say No – I'm terrified of flying. I can't get in a plane.

Dave says there was no intention to deceive the public or court publicity and fame.

He says he only took the video to show his daughter.

"I emailed the photos out to a few people to cheer them up. And it's just snowballed from there.

"It's just gotten so out of control, I definitely wasn't up for it. My head's spinning. I'm having a hard time dealing with it…Mentally…it's just, wow. I'm really outside my comfort zone.

"I'm a country boy. I live in a small town of 1800. "

"If people see it as a distraction and a good news story amidst all the tragedy we're going through, then that's great.

Despite the time-lag, the photographs of Tree stroking Sam the Koala have come to symbolise the plight of native animals left homeless after thousands of hectares of bushland burnt.

"At first she was really wary, then she just plonked down and it was like "You're a big predator, but I'm sore, I'm beat, I'm done." She was in pain. And she just looked up at me. So I yelled out for the bottle of water. And she started lapping it up.

Tree was reunited with Sam after she'd been taken to the Mountain Ash Wildlife Shelter for bandaging.

"It was great to see her again. She had a sniff and I got a bit up close and personal, and I even got a bit choked up.

"So I got in there and got a few happy snaps but I had to bail because I was getting a bit chocked up.

Tree is full of praise for the CFA and DSE's work.

"I don't think there's a word in the English vocabulary that sums up the work these guys are doing. The CFA is a massive family. If one stands we all stand, if one falls, we all fall.

"We got off scot-free in our hometown. My heart goes out to those guys out there still fighting. It's just tragic what's happened.

"So many people have cried over it and I think people needed a release. I think that's why they've related to the koala so much."

As at 5.00 pm Friday 13th Feb, the awful statisitcs - 1831 homes destroyed, some 7000 people homeless and 181 deaths (Police have stated this figure will increase)

One sub-human, oxygen thieving, lowlife piece of excrement has been has been caught and charged...

Source: ninemsn.com.au (National Nine News)

Local residents have been warned against seeking revenge after a man was charged over the Churchill bushfire which killed 21 people in Gippsland, in Victoria's southeast.

As he was driven away from Morwell Magistrates Court on Friday, angry residents hurled abuse at the man who has been charged with arson causing death, intentionally or recklessly causing a bushfire, and possessing child pornography.

He could face 25 years in jail.

He should get what they get here in USA, 25 years for every lost life.

25 x 21 = 525 years

And he will get some more physical punishment inside, from inmates ...

I agree with these sentiments, unfortunately here in Victoria criminals get away with a slap on the wrist, this man if found guilty will be treated like royalty by our leftist leaning magistrates.

The Age newspaper is suggesting that the Kinglake fires may have been started by a fallen powerline/pole, and it seems as a class action suit is going to be taken against the power company.

To be edited later, got something important to do.

No, he should get what they get here in TEXAS! Death!

200+ x Death = Still not enough to make up for what was taken... :(

Some people are idiots...

Wildfires

Unless I am mistaken in Austrailia arson is punishable by a mandatory 25 year term (for each case). Homicide (multiple) by arson would never get out of prison. I feel for ALL the victims.

In Australia:

Intentionally lighting a fire: Maximum penalty of 15 years.

Arson causing death: Maximum penalty of 25 years (full stop... not per death).

In the past people caught lighting fires (not causing death) were virtually slap on the wrist offences. With this lack of deterrent, herein lies the problem of the situation we have today, I believe.

My preferred punishment for this individual.... get him out to the firezone. He started it, so he can help stop it. Make him retrieve charred corpses from burnt cars and houses. He caused it, make him see what he's done. Community Service for the next x years. He destroyed communities, so he can help rebuild. When the physical rebuild of the affected communities is over, burn him at the stake.

I cannot help but ask myself the great question: "Why?". Why would somebody commit such a horrible atrocity? Why would they want to do kill dozens of innocent people, and render dozens more homeless? Why would humanity go so far as to do this to... humanity?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this terrible blaze.

I cannot help but ask myself the great question: "Why?"

I also feel utterly bewildered, and terribly, terribly sad at the destruction of whole neighbourhoods. The true death toll will probably never be known by humankind. Here in the UK, it is very difficult to imagne the scale of such a tragedy, but little snippets from our news programmes will stay with me forever - two burnt out cars abandoned by the roadside, who can tell what happened to the occupants? A motocycle lying on its side, its rider burnt to death a few yards away.

Anybody out there who have lost dear ones in this appalling tragedy have my heartfelt sympathy.

I only hope that the idiots who started the fires had no murderous intentions!
