A Bit Annoyed with the DLS

I am rather surprised that Auran/NV3 even run a free sector of the DLS.

Why on earth would you be surprised??!! ALL the content is created by THE USERS not the company itself. If Auran created all the content on the DLS themselves then it would be a different story altogether. But it is the average joe who works so hard that his content can be available to as many people as possible for free....

Even if it was only FCT, then wouldn't Auran be simply selling what other people made for their own profit? Exactly that.

If you want it free..you have to put up with free restrictions...
Auran almost went out of business providing a huge download service for free for the last decade..

You want better? Pay for it..If you can't...do without or put up with the 'I want everything free' restrictions. A business is supposed to make money not provide everything for free..You are all lucky they even allow what they do for free..IMHO I think it should be FCT only so Auran will be sure to be around in the future.

Well if ya take close to the 500,000 people who have bought the game at $50 each hmmmm thats $25 million dollars. Then seen how clogged up the dls was, so they figured they'd make another buck. I don't have a problem with someone making a buck, but, they want ya to pay for it two or three times. My butt they almost went broke, they went to the bank. And then said they need people to pay for the fct plus put another $50 price tag on TRS2009 and TRS2010. Then made the people that own 04 and 06 pay another $30 bucks.... come on, do the math. Just sayin.

Try doing the rest of the math - you think the 25 million was all profit? I guess basic business maths isn't taught in the land of the free these days. Even assuming it was 25 million which I really, really doubt...

Well look at the largest personal kuid# you can find and multiply that but $50. Then atleast 80% of them people have aready paid for 04 or 06. Like I said, do the math. 500,000 x $50 = 25,000,000. Basicly Math. Now the people that own 04 or 06 and add another 30 bucks each on top of the 25mil and you get your answer. Now I'll let you do it so you can have you math lesson for the day. :hehe:

you are perfectly right FBI_Bosch. Undoubtedly Auran treat the content voluntarily made by the content creators as raw material for the product they produce. Like any other business the price of raw materials is a large contributory factor in the overall price of the product and the eventual profit that they make.

In Auran's case the content creators work comes free as the raw material. This reduces the overall cost of the product, allows more people to purchase because of the overall lower cost and also allows for a healthy profit.

That I am afraid is free enterprise, the capitalist money system or any other title you would care to give it. However, unfortunately it is the truth.

Tough it may be, but it is the system by which we live until people decide to change it for another system. Whatever that could possibly be.

Of late someone is talking too much of life and learning to live. From my position very close to the sixties, I guess I could advise -May I?- this someone not tell people to judge and do what you can do because not everybody can do what you can. Almost sixty years age is an excellent watchtower to life 1:1. Virtual life -as some seem to confuse and mix over here- has nothing to do with 1:1- Maybe too much modelling, tiny world representation and model making twist and blur perception of reality

Mate this is freedom of speech. Stop telling me to stop crying and deal with life cause I am dealing with it quite well. I am just providing my own opinion, which many would agree to.

By no means it's you, John, by no means. They do know. Not surprisingly disrespectful attitudes to others' opinions usually coincide with them. What a logical coincidence!

But, please, feel flattened by no belonging to them. In the history of humankind there have always been other elite kinds no needing to use 'brute force'.

John, dear John, I do think we are trainzy friends. What could really put us apart? Different points of view on an unimportant virtual matters? I'd rather be not right than feeling you as foe or viceversa.

Both of us are well respected and if 'elite' means 'good old trainzers', yes, we both are that kind too. Some over here can't tell the same. Fortunately just a few; the woeful problem is that they usually make too much noise, sword noise, like the PG. :hehe: Those of us who have used both the pen and the sword in life 1:1, finally we make the best choice... and I'm not telling which is the best one.

Its's interesting no one has brought up the argument of similar business models -- let's take, for instance, the Apple App Store. Apple wants you to buy the iPhone/Pod/Pad and they will charge you hundreds of dollars for the device. On top of that, for the iPhone you need to pay a cell phone AND data plan contract monthly, for a good $60 each month.

Now on top of all this, you can't really get much out of the device without the Apps in the app store.

Now how's this : To get your app in the app store, even a free app, you need to be an apple developer. To be an apple developer, you need to subscribe ($99/yr).

So, to recap, you buy the device with a large up front cost, pay a monthly fee in some cases, and the content creators, most of whom are just people out in the world, not apple employees, pay for the privilege of offering you apps, including free apps.

In the current digital economy, the idea of offering a download service for a small fee on top of the upfront cost for the software which in this case does not even depend on the download service at all, is perfectly acceptable.

I am happy to pay the small amount to download -extra- content for my game, as I believe I am getting value for my dollar at the current price.

Actually, to bring up another business model that must drive folks insane -- how about subscription based software like World of Warcraft? You cannot even play the game without paying continuously -- you never own a standalone piece of software at all.

I don't like that model, and thus I don't play WoW.

Boy do I feel dumb!

There was I thinking that Auran had overheads like wages, rent for offices, coffee etc when in fact Trainz is programmed by unpaid slaves working under a bridge presumably trapped in some sort of giant hamster wheel to generate electricity for their stolen computers amd using pirated software.

Under those circumstances I think we should not be surprised when the odd bug creeps into the code, it must be really difficult to type accurately when you have to run on the spot all day.

Thanks for the lesson in basic economics, first thing on Monday I'll suggest to BMW that they adopt an similar business model to maximise their profits. The amazing thing is that they haven't thought of this idea themselves.
