2 GB GTX 560 Upgrade?

I'm looking at upgrading my video card.

I currently have a 1 GB GTS 450 (see sig for basic system specs).

I'm thinking about http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=555358&CatId=3669 which is a 2 GB EVGA GTX 560.

I have a 750 watt single rail power supply, so power is not an issue.

The big question is; will there be any benefit from having 2 GB of video memory as apposed to 1 GB? Or is it better to stick with maybe a slightly faster 1 GB video card for around the same price?

I'm checking cards at both newegg and tigerdirect (no sales tax at newegg).

Thanks.

Wow, I normally get responses in a short time.

But, anywho, I went and pulled the trigger on a 2 GB EVGA GTX 560. After checking out many options it really did float to the top as the best bang for the buck.

I think I may finally have the computer I really want.:udrool:

Asus Sabertooth P67 motherboard
i5-2500(k) overclocked at 4.5 ghz
Corsair H70 water cooler
8 Gigs Corsair Vengeance 1600 mhz DDR3 RAM
Ultra LSP 750 Watt power supply
2 1TB WD Black Caviar HDs (RAID 0) <Boot/OS/Other stuff/lots of movies>
120 GB Corsair Force GT SATA III SSD <Trainz 12>
Big Thermaltake case with lots of fans.
And my new yet to arrive 2 GB EVGA GTX 560

Woohoo, looking at the revised lineup makes me happy.

I would like to know if the GTX560 makes a difference in Trianz. Please keep us updated.

I have a GTX275. I want to upgrade to a GTX680, but I have to pay off my credit Card first.

regards

From what I understand, more than 1Gb does not make a difference at 1920x1200 or below and then only for certain games, probably not Trainz. I haven't really played with any resolutions above that anyway. In fact, some suggest" that cards with less memory actually perform a bit better than 2Gb+, although I would take that with a grain of salt since there are so many other variables.

I thought TS12 was optimised to work better from the graphics card than earier versions of Trainz. If so, surely it can't hurt to have more GPU memory available? I see the current top of the range AMD HD 6990 offers 4GB - would this add to our Trainz experience? Though, at around £500, it would need to!

I think Trainz got to the point many years ago where faster graphics cards will not make much of a difference compared to other components. (Limitations of the engine I imagine) As such, the CPU/RAM and Hard Drive play a more important role.

Though take what I say with a pinch of salt. :P That isn't to say a 2gb Graphics Card wouldn't be a benefit elsewhere, of course it will.

I have nothing against AMD Radeon, but since I already have a Nvidia card I"ll stick with that route.

The Twin Frozr looks like a good card. It has more stream processors, but the core and memory clocks are slightly lower then the EVGA. I just don't see it being $30.00 better.

In the end I went with the EVGA 560 because of price/performance and I like my current EVGA card.

When I get the card I'll fire up the game with a highly detailed route and see how much Vram it uses.

Edit to add: it's in Greensboro, should have it tomorrow.:)

GTX 560 is a good card (moreso the 560 Ti and even the 560 Ti 448 cores).
I have an Asus GTX 560 Ti, it's a great card, but some cards are even greater (GTX 680 or 690).
Have fun with a great GPU. Maybe get a 760 or an 860 or how the aequvalent of the 560 is called in about three years or when you want. (Or just build a new PC and keep your then old one as a secondary PC.)

Well, I got the card in and started playing around with it.

At first I thought it didn't make any difference at all.

Then I started checking out different routes.

It's gonna take some more looking into but it seems to me that speed trees are a big factor. On a route with lots of non speed trees there is no real difference, on a route with all speed trees then it starts to look like a good upgrade.

Just a first impression, got to look into it much further.

in a week or so i'll try to run the game from Xfast ram utility . i'm upgrading my current c2d to a ivy bridge . this game is much more subsystem dependent as you might think .
