1st Time User...Tips, downloads?

Hey all! I've been dabbling around with TS2006 and just recently bought TS2010 EE. They look and feel good; but I am a bit troubled by all this download gargin and like. I've been looking at the download station via the "ingame" download manager and it's a bit confusing. I guess I have a few questions as a first time user of trainz. Like I stated, I've dabbled with TS06 and never really got into it much; but have decided to bare the "learning curve" and learn how to play, I love trains in general so I guess it's only natural to play them on the PC. :)

I do have a few questions related to down loadable content and user fan sites.

1st...I used to play RailWorks.. I had downloaded RailWorks and after spending nearly $40's for the game and almost an addition $40 to download new routes and other down loadable content, I got tired of having to buy every little add on. That's why I returned to Trainz as I used to like the ticket feature; but things have progressed so far since the 06 days I can't seem to find functionality in the download station like I used to. It must have changed a bit.

How do I effectively use the ingame download manager? It's confusing to me because there appears to be no way I can sort through the seemingly 10's of thousands of content available. I can't remember if it's always been like this as I thought it was a bit more intuitive once. Is there a way to search via a search feature. I seem to not be able to find one. How do I search for, lets say... UP Big Boy? or Challenger, more general Steam locomotive in the download manager.

2nd...I've been surfing for a while now in and about the fan sites and so forth. Many years ago when I 1st started with TS2006 I was fascinated at the free content available for the game and even remember a few nice websites dedicated to TS06 content. Now.. there seems to be not too many sites dedicated to TS2006 or TS2010 EE. The few sites I have seen require you to pay a donation to download there content and locos. I would love to pay for all the content I see; but like most I have limited resources. Any knows of a few good websites to download trainz content that is free to use or have downloads at a low donation cost?

3rd...Last; but not least any general tips for 1st time engineers to the trainz community?

And in general... this looks to be a great place to hang and I hope to post more in the future.

Take care all and God Bless.

To narrow a search using the Content Manager, click the Download Station tab at the top of the CM and in the Search Action Panel on the left, select Category and in the side box pick the type of item you're looking for. You can force a sort of the Names by clicking on 'Name' at the top of the Name column. You can further restrict the display by going to the Search Panel andd clicking on the + box and selecting further filters.

Hi Grant,

Well written post. Nice to see!

My site the Trainz Resources Directory isn't going to help you with your DLS problems, but it does list almost all the Community web sites out there. It's possible you've missed some or several. Look under Web Sites in the categories bar on the left. I wish you could just type in TRS 2004 or whatever and have all the sites dealing with that version filtered.

Sadly that's not the case. I get almost zero co-operation from the website owners, despite promoting their sites for nothing. I've asked them to update the listings which I've written myself, but I think two people have done so in the past year.

The TRD also has a newsletter you can download. The last issue was 24 pages and it includes a few tutorials.

The numbers beside the categories are actual listings, but some listings take you to hundreds or even thousands of items. I hope you find it useful and if you find a great site, you can add a comment on the site's listing page.

Enjoy.

You can still use the TRS2004 online download station http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS.php with all more recent versions, so long as they are installed correctly. Either using the download cart or the 'Download (Helper)' link will place the items in the download panel of Content Manager. I still find this the easiest way to search and browse - just make sure that your Planet Auran profile has thumbnails enabled for the DLS.
