Young People And Railways (how old are you?)

Im 12. Been riding the Mary Ann since forever. Also, I am lucky because there is a train factory near me doing so much.
They do diesel trains (most 2100 class), commuter electric trains and they also do regular mechanical maintenance on the Mary Ann and the Valley rattler from gympie.(both respected trains around here). Just to bad I only have a single friend respecting my love of trains.

I'm almost 16, and I've been an avid railfan since age 2.
My home where I was born sat right on the Illinois Central's Chicago-Centralia line at Tuscola Illinois.
I can still remember those big black monsters rolling past the house...it was the only thing that pulled me away from Wheel of Fortune, really ironic is that Amtrak was still using F40PH's.

I became a member of the Monticello Railway Museum at age 13, and I plan to get a Lifetime Membership when I can afford it.
My Great, Great Grandfather worked for the Seaboard Airline Railroad in the early 1920's out of Hamlet, North Carolina.
My Grandfather Gary Wright, worked for the Pony Express in Champaign Illinois who at the time, I believe had a contact with the Illinois Central.
I plan to work for Norfolk Southern in a few years as an engineer on local freights between Somerset, Kentucky and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
I hope to one day run the Norfolk Southern Business Train, lucky for me, I have already worked aboard NS F9 #4270 when it came to the Monticello Railway Museum in September I was in charge of helping run the lights for photographers at a night photo shoot...I also got to blow that sweet Nathan K5LA!:udrool:

16. The story goes I've been a train buff since I walked into a toy store at age two, played with the wooden Thomas, and didn't want to leave.

I was a Caboose Club Member(for the kids) at the California State Railroad Museum. Now I have a regular membership. I want to start volenteering there but my life is quite busy as is. My dad says when he retires he will start volenteering at the museum.

As well as a railfan I'm an avid model railroader. My mom let my dad and I keep a year-round 5ft by 8ft O gauge layout in the living room. I got a G scale outdoor railroad in my grandpa's backyard.

I hope to one day become an engineer for Union Pacific. My friend who is an engineer for UP advises me against but, that still doesn't stop me.

I've heard good and bad from people about working for railroads, Matt.
I wouldn't let it rattle you, I have a good friend at MRM who worked for Union Pacific, as an Engineer for over 15 years, before that he worked for the MoPac and NYC altogether he worked the job for 45 years.
He has pretty good things to say about UP, however MP sucked.
His best advice, Join a Union, because the railroad will turn their back and do you dirty.

Good Luck,

Woody,

You may want to know that railroad employment has been dropping in recent years.

So, whether or not you join a union has little or no guarantee of continued employment.

Read the link below for some.... facts.

Also, your new "location" is somewhat offensive.

>>>>>>>> Location: The new U.S.S.R {Change for America:(}

Cheers.

Hey Woody,

Did you receive my PM from the other day?

41, once lived in an area of my borough near the remaing track (not the recently reactivated line) when B&O used it, I remember the old passenger cars and nighttime freight though I was too young to tell engine type then.

Trainz in School?

Want Trainz in School? ... I just finished a video showing how railroading in Trainz could be used in school to teach math:

Please comment and let me know what you think ; )

17 at the moment, been interested since i was about 7 or 8

my first experience was at a railway museum that uses a steam loco to do tourist trips even since then its been something i have always been interested in. At the moment i currently have to travel about 30-40 mins to get to a station but its worth it with almost every service imaginable running through it, Coal, passenger, freight, and express passenger to name a few

Want Trainz in School? ... I'll be putting together a Trainz entry in the upcoming "Reimagining Education" competition in January. It will be made up of routes and sessions that teach kids math and science by running rail operations. I will even propose multiplayer developments so kids can collaborate over the web.

With Norfolk Southern expanding the Crescent Corridor and BNSF just getting $20 billion in investment, rail transport of goods will be changing significantly over the next 20 years. It's a great way to learn about the changing dynamics of our economy.

I'll make a bigger "announcement" with a separate thread once the competition begins. There will be public voting on which applications the foundation awards so let's get the whole Trainz community behind this (and involved!!)

You can see what the competition is all about at:

ps - we'll get the Railroads to be a partner in education too by providing content, funding, and expertise.

That is cool, send me a PM with more info. This is Trainz Magazine news. www.trainzmagazine.webs.com

12. Been an avid Thomas fan since I saw the TV series & Dad got me a collection of stories (And still am no matter what anyone says) but never liked the new seasons. I started with UTC when I was 7, graduated to '04 when I was 10 and now am running TS2010 without any problems. I'll be here fora long time yet.

Now to make my comment.

Hey everyone, I'm 12 (gonna be 13 on January 21) and I've been interested in trains ever since I was about 4 or 5 and I've been in an EMD spartan cab GP38-2. I am also an avid fan of Thomas and got trainz in late 06-early 07, and when I first stepped inside a hobby shop full of models of the real thing, my world changed. I like steam, diesel, and electric trains. Even though I'm like American trains, I really love to model in TRS the period of British Railways during the Pre-tops period where steam was still puffing and the first generation of diesels were taking their first breaths. I'm an avid train lover and very glad to know that I'm not alone out here.

well heres one for you mbv67, i've been in the cab of our thomas! ( and most of the other steam locos too :D )

Meyshollop

meyshollop, I live in gosport across the harbour from portsmouth.
Thanks for the posts Guys but you lot are all male i think there are less girls in the railways that said there always has been. why do people think it is uncool to watch trains?

Good luck Woody!:D
In English my teacher has asked me to stop writing about any vehicle, because I've written tons of stories about cars and railways.:hehe: I'm thinking up, while its still the holidays, a new story which is like Thomas The Tank Engine. It's going to be set in the 1950's and have a Gresley A3 as the main character. He travels to and from London and Glasgow, pulling expresses and fitted freights. And rescuing stranded diesels along the way:hehe: .
