Yards!

So I like building Yards! I was wondering if anyone can throw a map of yard in my direction so that I can work on something realistic :D

Try Google Earth and look at the yard in North Little Rock Arkansas.

google earth is a good place to find railyards. Radnor yard in Nashville is a fine one. I've been meaning to model it myself...just haven't gotten around to it yet. Here's a shot of the classification / service portion of the yard.

Try some of the ones in Germany like in Wuerzburg (follow tracks from station to Vietshochheim), they can often be enormous.

Don't get too big!

I have found that these type of yards are framerate killers.
If you have this type of yard and put lots of cars on them your computer will come to a complete stop when you run through it.
Be cautious about how much your computer can handle.

Get a bigger computer.

Google Earth is good for modeling things as they are now this is something I can never do. I like modeling the rail system as it was in the 1940's.

I have the track plans for the New Haven Railroad's main classification yard that was located in New Haven, CT. Do not bother to google earth this, I've been made to understand that there is absolutely nothing left of it.

The name of the yard was Cedar Hill and it had two humps one on each end. If interested in these track plans private message me and give me an e-mail for forwarding. This was a massive yard it could have been even bigger than Rice Yard in Waycross is now.

Damn these are great, Ive got a really good computer so I'm not concerned (although I used 2m sections of some included track and it was killing my computer with only 7 sidings!)

HSSRAIL,

I would love to build a layout of Cedar Hill. I work in New Haven and see the yard everyday.
Could you you email me a copy?
(I sent you a private message with my email)

Thanks!
Gary
