Won't merge. Why not?

I made a little 4 grid layout that I want to merge into the norfolk & western - appalachian route. everytime I try, the TS12 program hangs up. I have been successful in merging other layouts but can't get these to merge. could it be because the norfolk & western - appalachian route is a built-in route?

Merge problems are a known issue with TS12.

Cloning the built-in to your own kuid might help, but the TS12 'Merge' issues appears to be with big routes..

Andy is right. This is a known issue and N3V is "working" on it but with no ETA on a repair.

I found that merging works if there are little or no objects on the importing route. I did an experiment last weekend and figured this out by merging in a smaller route into my 150 mile route. Merging in the route as it was made, caused the program to crash. Removing the buildings and all the trees, allowed the merge in without any problem what-so-ever. Now I have to chore of putting back buildings, etc., but that's not a problem for me because I was going to change quite a few things anyway.

ok thanks, I will try deleting and merging. I was thinking the reason the routes won't merge is because the norfolk & western - appalachian route is a built-in route and therfore copy protected. Has anyone tried merging with a built-in route?

Did anyone do some testing yet with what the biggest still working merges are? How many baseboard and/or objects are we talking about that still works for sure?

That would be a job for the brew crew - there are too many variables for a quick informal test to establish any meaningful benchmark.

I keep 04 installed solely to merge newly-created DEM routes. These are large newly-created content-free 'blank' routes so I would GUESS that the raw size of the route was an issue rather than the amount of content. Fact is that neither 10 nor 12 will merge them, 04 does it in a dawdle. Another fact is that somebody else trying exactly the same thing MAY get different results. Smaller routes with high content MIGHT get the same -or different - results. Is it the OS - is it memory - is it.....

Too hard!

I found on my system that the limit is 35 Mg size of both routes. This includes all dependancies. As Dermmy says , this could change on another system. Because the issue is not a consistent problem but is variable, it may explain why there is still no fix for the problem a year since the original release date of TS12. I have no probs with 04, 06 nor 10, just TS12.

Hello,

For Trainz 2010 :

Does anyone know the following?

I tried to merge large routes ( more than 400 MB ), but received the taddaemon error.

Is it possible to merge large route?

When you merge smaller routes, do you need to make sure that the size of the received merged route is kept under a certain figure ( let us say 1 gb )?

Thank you

Best regards

From the same logic: so in ts04,06,09 and 10, the problem of consistent or variable issue not exist??????

In my exerience, celje, the problem does notexist for me. I had some problems in 04 and 06 with very large merges. The sim would crash. However I definitely had more success than TS12. It has become very rae to experience a crash in TRS06. In TRS10 I have not had any problems at all. In TS 12 even small merges fail and the sim crashes. As I said , some machines may experience different levels of success. But the fact that Auran acknowledges there is a problem with TS12 confirms it exists.

Hello Bolivar,

What were the sizes of the routes to be merged and what were the sizes of the routes when the merging was done?

Thank you

Hi there Belgian46. I did not check sizes in other versions, because I just did not have anywhere near the failure rate that I did encounter in TS12. So I did not bother. But statistically my failure rate in TRS 06 was probably 1% whereas with TS12 it is 100% failure to merge. I have encountered no failures with TRS2010. This version has proven to be the most reliable. Again this is on my computer, on someone else's there may be variatiions.

But the code may be the same from previous versions, but other things have changed which interact differently. It is definitely some kind of memory issue. I've watched the merge hit a brick wall using Process Explorer www.technet.com. With this you can see memory useage of a process in a more granular detail than taskmanager and it is a lot easier to setup than the system monitoring tools built into Windows.

Hello Bolivar,

No failures with TRS2010 - would you mind telling your computer specifications?

Tomorrow, I'm doing a hardware upgrade - going to intel proc I5 2500K - 8Gb mem

Thank you

Hello Bolivar,

Ok - my hardware upgrade has been partly done - Proc + mem installed - next week the Videocard will be installed ( going from Nvidia GTS250 1Gb to Nvidia GTX 560 1GB )

If trainz2010 still gives me the Taddeamon error when merging large routes, then Trainz 2010 has limitations.

If this is the case, I hope the fix for Trainz12 will solve this issue.

Best regards
