Windows Service Pack Requirements - Revisited

I am posting this as a new thread to address concerns of users in the same boat I am. Does TS2009 (or TS2010, if anybody knows) work with Windows XP PROFESSIONAL and XP Service Pack 2? Not SP3, SP2. And not Home, but XP Pro. Thanks folks.

Simple answer is "yes". I've run both 06 & 09 on XP Pro with SP2 (no problems) then SP3 (in OpenGL) without any problems or issues. I can't see any reason why you would have any problems running TS2010 on XP Pro with either SP2 or SP3. (I'm still currently running 06 on one of my PC's that has XP Pro SP3, without any problems).

There was reports of problems doing upgrades with XP with SP2. Many people with SP2 could not upgrade as there is a known bug and it restarts your computer when trying to upgrade.

Anybody with more info feel free to chime in.

Anybody and everybody please post with your experiences.

That said, there appears to be another difference between XP Pro and XP Home.

XP Pro allows applications to up to 2GB of memory space, but this can be increased to 3GB with the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file. This, as I understand it, was always allowed by XP *PROFESSIONAL* (or at least with a lower service pack?)

XP Home only became capable of this feature with a more-recent service pack (SP3?) from what I gather. I have no large-application development experience so I don't know the answer.

Can someone from Auran clarify exactly WHY SP3 is a prerequisite for TS2009 and TS2010? I'm curious for a number of reasons, not the least of which is whether I will run into problems developing routes on an SP2 machine.

Please ignore the "/3GB switch in the boot.ini file" there was a book, I think by Microsoft, that had incorrect information on this and it got copied. Yes technically you can run a 32 bit program such as Trainz in more than 2 gigs but the requirements on the program side are roughly the same as running it under a 64 bit operating system and using 4 gigs. If you want to explore the /3GB switch please go to the Microsoft site and read all the technical papers and comments on this, books are not to be relied on in this instance.

Windwalkr implied that TS2010 might be 3GB-aware. I'll ask for clarification.

I have a AMD quad with Vista 64 SP2, and TS2009 runs fine so far. My trouble is with TRS 2004, but not with the basic running of the program.

Read the first six pages on this site if you want a better understand on the 2 gig limitation & LAA (LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag); - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/64-bit-vista-gaming,2250-2.html

Another really good link provided by Clam1952; - http://www.wintellect.com/CS/blogs/...bit-native-c-exes-with-largeaddressaware.aspx
