Windows 10 low memory warning.

So, this usually happens if it's repairing the trainz asset database (in TANE). More particularly, when it's at the 'scanning for faulty asset files' stage. And after a few mins, it throws up a low memory warning, (this is to do with RAM) and decides to terminate 'Building Trainz Asset Database' much to my displeasure. Now, My laptop has a dual core Intel Celeron 1005M Processor. It has a 4GB of DDR3 SODIMM RAM card with a speed of 1600MHz. It's a Toshiba Satellite C50. I've found the RAM Compartment easy to open. Of course, I'm planning to get a card of the same specification, but which brand would you recommend? (Also, is the Processor 2nd or 3rd Gen?)

Before you go spending your hard earned cash on additional RAM you should first ensure that your computer (motherboard) will actually support more than 4GB and don't make the mistake of assuming that because there is a free RAM socket by default it will. Use the Toshiba website and look up your specific model using the label on the underside of the laptop as a guide.

If you telephone/email the likes of Crucial Technology or Corsair both will assist you picking the best memory for your laptop and their prices are as reasonable as others should you choose to order from them. Ebuyer, Scan and Novatech are three of the many respected online mail order companies for computer parts.

I think you will find your processor is a third generation Ivy Bridge processor. Peter

Ensure that you have pagefiles (virtual memory) slightly larger than your RAM on any drive, as well as C:\ drive, that has Trainz.

Thanks. The actual Laptop is Toshiba Satellite C50-A-146.

I'm wondering if I should go for:

The spec of your laptop you highlighted seems to be capable of accepting up to 16GB but the Corsair memory is a kit of 2x 4GB see the Tech Spec tab on the Corsair page you also highlighted. I can't tell how many memory sockets the laptop has but you already have one occupied by the current installed RAM and I'd be surprised if you have another two free. First see how many memory sockets there are, then decide if you are going to add to the existing RAM of replace it and start again. Corsair is a good stable make. Peter

Nope, only has two card slots and one is currently occupied by the existing RAM. Probably gonna take the old one out and replace it with the new ones. I have contacted Corsair about this.

Admittedly I'm using a gaming desktop with 16GB RAM but am running a large T-ANE session and for interest have also just started a database repair and am using just over 3GB of RAM in total, of which 2.1GB is T-ANE. You will also require an additional 2GB to run your graphics as your laptop shares its memory, so I think 8GB would be cost effective, whether you purchase 8GB or just 4GB to compliment your current RAM.

As I'm sure you will appreciate your processor isn't the fastest but you may wish to consider closing anything you don't really need when running Trainz, particularly all the so called bloat-ware Toshiba tend to install on their laptops and many of the apps Windows 10 enable by default if that is your OS. You will not gain a lot but every little will probably help. Peter

On the condition memory is compatible, generally if you mix memory of slightly different specifications the overall performance will tend to that of lower spec memory. So if you complimented your existing 1600 memory with 1333, the performance would tend to be that of the 1333, conversely if you installed 1866 memory assuming it would work with your motherboard the performance would be similar to that of the 1600 memory. So, my module arrived today. Installed it, and noticed an improvement. Also, discovered that windows defender was scanning the details and Tane folders. I excluded both folders, and there were no hard faults after that.

You may still want to consider increasing your virtual memory as Ian pointed out. T:ANE Content Manager opens up a lot of files handles in memory when committing lots of assets, and this can cause the out of memory condition.

Well, my current virtual memory is set at 10028 MB for all drives, Including a readyboost cache of 4094mb on my flash drive.

Stats:

Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
Total Physical Memory: 7.88 GB
Available Physical Memory: 4.92 GB
Total Virtual Memory: 17.7 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 13.1 GB
Page File Space: 9.79 GB

Do they look alright?

Ready Boost doesn't count, but the rest should be okay. The only way to really find out is to test it. Open up a bunch of assets and let CM commit them. If you get the low memory warning, you know you need to increase your VM. :)

I just think it is cool you have a good working Celeron, they must have gotten better since the socket 775 version I bought. I use it just for file managing (holding files, copying files, moving files) and that is it.

Celeron have gotten better. This was my first laptop:
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01719072

And it was rubbish. Even with two 2gb RAM modules, it played awfully. It was fine on TS2010 and Pre SP1 TS12, but it took a disliking to TS12 SP1 after that. Plus, the fan was excessively noisy. On the plus side, the speakers were awesome.
