Why Is Trainz So Fragile?

It seems like if you hit the cancel button with almost anything, you are going to need a reinstall sometime soon. Installing content takes longer than I remember to.

I have to say that trailing back to my earliest version of Trainz, 2006, I have had exactly one crash, a few months ago, and was able to reconstruct everything I had built to that point. Seems to me that Trainz is a fairly robust program. I wanted to add that this is not a criticism of you, just an observation. I wonder if your experience, repeated by others from time to time, has more to do with other programs you have installed on your machine than it does with the program itself.

If it has to do with the computer you're using, I got my laptop for Trainz and it's been abused by taking numerous falls off of the couch. It's still in one piece, unlike the last one.

Bernie,

Now that I think of it, I haven't had any truly Trainz-caused crashes in a very long time. Any crashes I have had were either self-inflicted or caused by computer hardware problems which were totally unlrelated to Trainz. What I was going to say in my post, when I was interrupted by a household issue, was TRS2004 handled the Trainz data differently. It wasn't as stable as Trainz is today, but the content management side was a bit more stable because it didn't have the exposed database we have now. Many people have database-related problems today due to not waiting for the program to close down completely. It's too bad there wasn't some kind of progress bar or message when closing down the program. The program its self closes, but the database remains open. People think it's safe to shutdown their computers and it's not. If there was a message about the database, then they'd know when to shutdown.

Fragile? You can drive a HST over 100 m radius, right angle curve, with speed of 100 mph and it won't derail. Try to do it in the real life! Trainz are tougher than tankz!
