Hi,
I need some help for a real-life (North American) modelling project. When did 40' stock cars, box cars and other rolling stock built from the 1900s to the 40s disappear? The proposed layout is set in the late 60s/early 70s, and the local model shop has huge amounts of Life-Like 2000 40' rolling stock going cheap.

In the Pacific Northwest the Burlington Northern would use retired stock cars for grain service during the peak of grain season until about 1982 when the elevators in Seattle and Tacoma refused to unload anything other than covered hoppers. The stock cars were fitted with grain door material to cover the slats and then loaded with grain.

Stock cars ended in 1970 do to trucks, a few 60' cars lasted longer. Most of the cars from 1900 would be gone by 1930, cars from 1940 up to 1970 but most of the cars used in WWII got replaced in the 1950's. An all steel car was good for 20-40 years and some railroads re-built them to last 40 years or more. Also a car can not be taken out of service until it is ether back to is own railroad or damaged beyond repair.
