When does edited session become a new route?

I've been editing a session that came bundled with TS:Mac (Wharton Coal Active, part of Hawes Junction route)
and that I had saved earlier under a different name. Normally the Surveyor asks whether I want to save the
edited session by overwriting the earlier saved version by that name. But then, to my surprise, this choice wasn't
there anymore, only the possibility to save as a new route and session...

I've checked whether or not I inadvertently added some route-layer stuff, like triggers, but that doesn't seem to
be the case. Does anybody have an idea why an edited session would suddenly become a new route as well?
 
This will automatically happen if you edit a built-in route.

This is because Trainz does not allow built-in routes to be overwritten.

Yes, of course, but I didn't edit a route, but a session. In fact, I had edited that session several times before,
and was able to save it each time by overwriting the previous version. But apparently I did something during
this last edit that caused Surveyor to think there was a new route... what I don't know. All I did was add a lot
of Set Junction rules after a Check Trackside; plus a couple of Time Checks followed by Set Junctions.
Nothing fancy, really, since I'm only a Mac noob...
 
I have the same problem as hkoster1.

Sometimes if I work at a session for a downloaded map, adding commands to a portal, for instance, then there is not only the session saved, but the map, and I don't know what I have done wrong. I wanted only save the session and not the map. :confused:

No junctions modified. One of the first things I did during this last edit was adding a few triggers, and I noticed that they were "route-layer"
by default. I changed that to "session-layer" before saving anything -- I was wondering about that, because triggers created during those
earlier edits were "session-layer" by default. Is this a clue?
 
I've found that if I keep the route layer locked at all times, I can't inadvertantly make a change like adding a trackmark which by default will go to the route layer. With that layer locked, it has to go to the session layer.

@Shane: That may be so, but I had also added triggers (session-layer) during those earlier edits, and then no problem with
saving those edited sessions as sessions of the original route. Questions, questions...

Another thought: I still have the original edited session from before the last edit. I could redo the edits piece-meal
and see which one makes the difference referred to in my OP. Could take a while, though, so if anyone reading this
has an idea as to what caused the problem...? Please?
 
I'll wait to see how your tests go, as it is layer-dependant.

Follow Dap's advice of locking the route layer (this can be done using the Layers tab - one up from bottom in Surveyor), then click the lock icon next to Route layer. Be aware that this may be classed as a route change.

Great, will do. Even if it is classed as a route change, then I would still have the original edit from before the last one... so I'm not worried.
