I live within sight of the former Western Australian Government Railways/Westrail (and now ARG-QR/WestNetRail - damn these private operators) 3' 6" South-West Main Line to Bunbury, just south of the limit of the Perth suburban network at Armadale. About the only train I regularly see on this line is the four times daily return Australind DMU service between Bunbury and Perth, although EMU services from Perth run as far as Armadale, which I ride regularly.

There used to be the occasional freight train on this line, (usually late at night), but nowadays ARG seems to send most, if not all their freight traffic via the port of Kwinana, bypassing Armadale completely. There also used to be the occasional steam or diesel hauled excursion train as well, but since the Hotham Valley Railway abandoned mainline tours due to spiralling insurance costs, there hasn't been any lately (the last one I saw on this line was back in 2005).

However, there has been talk over the years of extending the EMU service beyond Armadale further south to Byford, a few kilometres south of my house, but nothing has ever eventuated. Ah well, at least I have trains near me anyway, which is enough. :)

I live on Fox Island, Washington State, USA. Yes, its an island and we have no trains, in fact, I think a mile long freight would be half the length of the island. I can hear the trains, BNSF, UP and Amtrak, as they run along the shores of lower Puget Sound. In the summer with windows open they will even wake me up. Not complaining, in fact it is rather pleasant.
To do any train watching I have to go to Tacoma.

I only got the BDRV this section of the line is currently abandoned. But there's plans to re-open it for their steam locomtoive :D it's ex PRR, than became Penn central, than Conrail, than sold to a private individual and became the BDRV

I'm from Hemet, California. The Santa Fe used to run into town to pick up grain, but the rails haven't seen an train in a couple of years now. The old station is now a diner. Metrolink bought the track a long time ago and they were supposed to fix up the track so they could start rail service there but it's been ten years now and nothing has happened.
