What is the point of multiple forums?

I really don't want to sound like a curmudgeon, but I guess I will.

I just logged into the forum and went to "General Trainz" and found 34 threads with new stuff in them. Fine. Of these, 24 of the 34 are not arguably, but obviously more appropriately put in forums about the DLS, or Surveyors, or other places specifically set up for these sorts of posts. Of the 10 that were not obviously misplaced, half were arguably misplaced.

I would suggest that all of the forums simply be merged. Dividing them up is not a help, it is an impediment and just makes browsing new material less convenient. If the members won't respect the topics, why should N3V?

Bernie

Don't this belong in the Trainz Community forum?

I can understand General Trainz as a catch-all since it's the second one down when I log in - what I don't get is why so many people scroll down past 25 other subforums to get to Freeware Announcements, then post all their questions, requests, missing KUID help, and other drivel that has nothing to do with announcing new freeware?

Welcome to the curmudgeon club! There are only a few members, and you'll have to suffer the slings and arrows of everyone else who firmly believe the "rules" don't apply to them, but you're in good company! If you are announcing freeware, then please do so in the Freeware forum with an image twice as large as the COC states, it's freeware right? Finish it off with your massive sig banner image, and you're well on your way to becoming the self absorbed POC that everyone loves and holds in awe for their daring egotistical display of how wonderful they are! Post whatever wherever you like! It's Dodge City here, are you boys gonna pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?:D

Don't this belong in the suggestion boxcar forum?

I really don't mind when n00bs make m!$takes, but it's often the same ones over and over, and instead of pointing out the error when someone posts in the wrong forum, people answer the question. One kid actually was called out on it, and he said he always posts questions in screenshots or freeware announcements on purpose because he gets faster answers there!

Join date 2007 answered by join date 2009, shouldn't they know better? Especially considering the question was asked 3 years ago!

Just as well there's you and a few other wanna be mod's then euphod to bring everyone into line, God help us when you retire AGAIN.
Cheers Mick.:hehe:

Or even beter:
Put the General forum at the bottom, so people pass all the forums they should have used before ending up there.
I agree with that idea, as it should help out, although the only problem is some people don't read in the first place.

This is very true. How many "don't work" posts are there when N3V has posted that the DLS server is down?

I agree that posts should be placed in the correct category. I do occasionally post something out of category in the General Forum, but I do that if I feel I want the post to get the most attention. Sadly many people just post there because it's a quick shot rather than doing some work to find the appropriate place to post.

N3V haven't officially posted that the DLS is down yet this time, although they usually only do so as a result of another member's thread.

True, Shane. But there are times when they've announced that the iChat server is going to be down on such and such a date, yet people keep posting about can't connect to the iChat server! It doesn't just happen in these forums. I've seen this at work as well. I agree with James. People don't read.

John

I agree as well. It's amazing how many people, for example, post about issues for which one of my sticky threads or tutorials has the answer.

Moving it to the bottom wouldn't help, like I said they scroll down past 25 other forums to post "help cant find kuid" in the Freeware Announcements forum. In any case the ones who slap it into the first forum they come to would post "help my gaem brok" in Surveyors Operators and Engineers instead. Only real solution is to make prospective members pass a test on forum usage before the account is activated, which most webmasters won't do.

A good start to tidy up General (or Community) is to:
1. Delete all the threads that start with, "I'm leaving..." or similar.
2. Delete all the "How Old Are You"/"Please post your picture" threads to thwart the paedo's.
3. All the "I saw a train today"/"Amtrak and or VIA Sucks" type threads should be bounced into Prototype Talk

I could suggest a couple of users who between them, produce a prolific number of utterly useless threads.

I'm just going to make a cup of tea now. Perhaps I'll start a thread about it with a 'warning triangle' icon to indicate that hot water is dangerous.

That's the way pfx. Start a thread with a bit of humour as the forum seems to have lost much of the humour that was in it when I first joined as I remember.

It was you (pfx) that started the "beer is brain food" thread a couple of years ago that I still regard as the funniest and best thread posted on the forum since I have been a member.

After all, this is a forum related to a train simulation game that is there for "enjoyment" and therefore there should be some humour in at least some of the threads so that the forum can be enjoyable as well.

Let's have an out with the "I am leaving" threads, and in with the "let's have laugh" threads

I would assume that leaving out the " I am leaving threads" would also include a ban on the " I am having a hissy fit " threads too!!!!!;)
