Content files names are gibber

(BETA)TRS2009

TRS2004

And saving files that you downloaded from DLS in another DIR (like in TrainzHelper in TRS2004)

At least its by KUID number according that second screenshot of yours... I really didn't like the TRS 2006 version where it was just a series of numbers and letters and almost literally impossible to find something specific without using the brittle CMP. The Kuid numbers are more like 2004 back in the day. So thats a step in the right direction...

Hi Phantom. Can I ask why you need to know the name of the folder? If you find the item using CM2, you can edit is using CM2, archive it, save to .cdp or whatever, all without knowing the folder name.

The whole concept of Content Manager is to remove the burden of finding files or having some naming convention for your files and managing content through the Trainz Database.

I realize this is a different system but I think the majority of people will find it far easier than manual systems. After all, that is what a database is good at - managing content.

Cheers

Tony

TRS2009 gibber? Pre-ordering to get the privilege of being beta testers and paying to do so. Smart on managements' part, not so smart on the guinea pigs,he,he. You're welcome to the trouble.

I think you are missing the point Will. There is no question that the folder names are not descriptive of the asset. The question is why Peter M wants the folder names to be meaningful when the database does all the work for you.

Too right, there is no need to go getting your dirtly little hands in folders that are strictly for content manager. Meddling with the 'local' folder is dodgy business for dodgy people.

I thought the reson for a BETA version was to find out what a large group of people (or person) like, dislike, or to find bugs with the program before it is released.

With TRS2004 I keep a zipped up copy of Downloaded content backup.

The thing with the local folder is this. It is used for storing a compressed (correct?) version of the object in a database that allows TRS06-TS2009 (and hopefully beyond) to start up without the need to look for content in the 'custom' and 'dispatcher/downloads' folders (which can take a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time). To back it up, just make a zipped version of the 'local' folder (this still works I hope?), and hide it away somewhere. If you need to re-install, place the local folder back in, and run a full asset database repair (this will take a long while, but only needs to be done if the TAD completely dies, which I've found to be relatively rare in this build) and it should all re-appear. CMP will make finding content easier in this sense, as you can actually search for kuid #s, names, authors, etc. The old system you only went by either a name (folder name, not necessarily correct) or the kuid number.

There's nothing stopping you from backing up content with 2006/2009. In fact, I find it much easier. Either you can simply copy the entire Local folder to a CD/DVD, or there are several ways you can use CMP to copy individual items into CDP form (the archive features comes to mind). I don't have Trainz installed at the moment so I'm a bit rusty, but I'm sure others can be more specific.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. If you've skipped over 2006 and have been using 2004 this entire time, I'd suggest giving this new system a chance. It might grow on you.:)

Personally, I don't mind the CMP (I know it isn't called that anymore...) based system, but for discussion's sake, what about redundancy? Think of it like this: Cars have brakes, but they also have an "emergency brake" too for redundancy and a fail safe. So, say for instance the utility fails, then you could manually go in an search for something.

Like I said, I don't have any problem with having a program do the work for you, I'm just saying this for the sake of discussion and opinion...

You couldn't serach for it easily by anything other than file name. If CM2 "breaks" then rebuild the database and you can search by author, kuid, category, item name, date, build version number and so on. It takes a while to get your head around new systems but hopefully we'll have a shiny new CM2 tutorial up later this week to explain many things about it.:)

I can think of 1 reason to have a naming convention that is understandable to humans.

If you find you are missing a kuid (say on a rebuild or importing a route) it is almost impossible to find it in your backups and if it is no longer on the DLS then you have further problems.

However a quick search of TRS2004 downloads is easy to do.

Maybe CMP should have the ability to be pointed at a backup location to find out if missing kuids are available locally.

I'd think for the database to rebuild, it would take some patience as well ;). I've had no problems to report on TS09 with Windows Vista Business/Home Premium. Same with 06, TC1, 2, and 3.
