Just a curious question here:

What kind of video capture software do you guys use to catch your video trainz!!??

Thanks :)

Hi Dermmy & Ishie,

Up until now I've used the free version of Fraps, but a few days ago downloaded the Game Recorder. I've tried using the 'resident' XP Moviemaker, but it crashes when I try to do any editing in it.
Haven't had time to try out the Game Recorder yet.

Dermmy, are you happy with it?
Any comments/comparisons etc??.

:)

I bought the full version of Fraps and it WILL NOT capture sound, or at least if it does capture sound it won't play .I sent a query to their "support" centre and only recieved a useless "Microsoft style" automated response which was no use at all.I think the first letter in Fraps should be replaced by a "C".

Honestly haven't used it much. I have used Fraps (free version) a couple of times and been quite happy. Game Recorder is reputed to be lighter on resources, therefor better framerates and has no maximum time period on captures (free FRAPS does).

I have used the full version of Fraps for years, It records sound and replays faithfully with no trouble. I would suggest the problem is with your computer system setup and not with the Fraps software.

Or maybe the "record sound" option isn't checked...

Hi Andy,

I had trouble with getting Fraps to record sound also. At the time my computer used the onboard sound card on the motherboard. I have since gotten a Soundblaster Audigy and now Fraps works perfectly. Does your computer also use an onboard sound card? Audigy cards are decent and pretty cheep these days.

Todd

"Or maybe the "record sound" option isn't checked..." Checked it.Checked "Detect Best Sound Input".Checked "Use Windows Sound Input".Uninstalled and re-installed Fraps.Beautiful video qualty, but a silence Charlie Chaplin would be proud of.
"Prowler901" thanks for the suggestion. As far as I remember my PC has Realtek Audio built-in.Fraps may work with a proprietary sound card but then again it may not, in which case I would have wasted more money. As far as I remember they don't say you need a sound card to run it, and my PC has oodles of HD and RAM.

Here's the one you need.

CamStudio

Open source, completely free under the GPL license, and works like a dream.
It can also convert to flash video if you want, and has all the bells and whistles you need, including full screen or defined area of screen, and sound (only through Micrphone at the mo).

Never tried it with Trainz, but works great for video tutorials.

Yup, that's the exact built-in audio I have on my board. Never got it to work. Made sure I had all the updated drivers and everything. When I put in the Audigy, everything worked just fine.

Ah! That'll teach me to buy software without checking out how it works on other peoples PCs first.I have sent another query to their support centre and I am sure the automated response will be vey helpful (not).Cheers Prowler, at least now I know, and knowledge, as the saying goes "is cheap at any price".

I have no problem with the sound using Fraps, and I have a very exotic sound system, the KX Driver. I think with some investigation you will be able to fix your sound problem.
