Valley Railroad 2-3-10

Last night we had our weekly work session and I snapped some pictures....We have a 9-4 session planned for this Saturday. We want to get 3025's main rods done, and the wheels should be back from Strasburg sometime this month after they were re machined. The wheel configuration is a 2-8-2 and will make it the largest steam locomotive in the State of Connecticut. 3025 is slated to be finished by 2011. In which case it is planned that Valley's #97 will be taken out of service for some restoration.
*Caution very large images in links! Enjoy!*

I beg to disagree.

The locomotive is the ex-Knox and Kane's Chinese SY 2-8-2. It would be stupid to try to turn it into a different wheel arrangement. They're cosmetically altering it into a NH J1. I realize that it's not originally a NH loco. I've ridden behind the locomotive before to. I know for a fact It's a mike, they're not changing that and that's not something you can argue.

I stand corrected:)
The way your original response came across made it sound like it was a J1 to begin with. Sorry for the confusion.

wow, a J1 in the works, this will be interesting to see how this will turn out, I know the original has been scrapped, but I don't see a problem with having a representation of the original J1 2-8-2 operate on the Valley railroad, which sounds like a great project!

Thank you for the pictures.

OT: How is the trackwork coming? Anymore line expansion going on? I know there was some talk about it awhile back.

Trackwork really hasn't been much of anything because the weather has simply not allowed it next Saturday we may be able to get a brush cutting session...weather permitting of course. Right now the are waiting on the verdict of a grant which is meant to possibly bring P&W trains through the VRR for a shorter trip to Hartford...Rather then coming from New London, to New Haven then north bound to Hartford... I am sure if that grant is approved track work will greatly be increased seeing as how the money will be there to use.
The line still stops just north of Goodspeed/Haddam however the track is cleared a lot further northbound then most people think. It is just that the rails are not capable of holding the weight of a train, and is only to be used by speeders and hi-rail trucks.

Thanks for the update, Gandalf. I was curious if anything at all was being done on it. There used to be quite a thread about the Valley RR over at Railroad.net www.railroad.net before their forum crashed and had to be rebuilt.

It would be nice to see the line used again for freight. I would like to see the Airline rebuilt, but that's another story. ;)

No problem John:wave:
I don't like to go to places like that unfortunately because I run into a lot of foamers who think they know how to run a railroad, and have no qualms about telling a railroad how to run a railroad.. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

P.S. Got some more pictures I will post here soon...got them from early this morning.

I look forward to seeing the new pictures. :D

Railroad.Net isn't as bad as that. It's pretty heavily moderated so you don't get the know-it-alls speaking up all the time. There are a few, but they're put in their place. Sound familiar?? ;)

There's a lot of good action information as well as links to NERail Photo archive. Otto VonDorak is the owner of the site and a big contributor.

Anyway I like the updated news on the nice little regional running museum. I never went there because I traveled a lot, but I did see the Chinese steamer at Essex Jct. when they first got it :D

Only 5 pictures were able to be taken yesterday since my camera batteries decided to go from full to empty in 10 minutes:confused::'(

But anyway yesterday I started off painting the battery box of 0900 with epoxy paint to prevent rusting etc. I then moved over to 3025 and began sanding a small dime sized area in each little square posted in earlier pictures so the ultrasound can get an exact reading. I then moved back to 0900 to help an old engineer repaint 1 of the hoods of the locomotive because the primer used was bad and the paint began falling off, but this is in preparation for the Eagle Flyer.

The pictures are cool.

Here's a new thread on the new Railroad.net forum.

They're going NORAC? This might be because of the P&W.

Cool!

John
I actually haven't heard about that. But I would listen to anything the user ebtmikado says before anyone else. He has been a FVRR member for a very long time and has all the access to the RR. Not to mention is now close friends with all of the crew and staff because of it.
