USA - Trash containers. How are they used?

Davie_UCF

Here since 2001, Trainz!!
Got some flatcars in Trainz that carry what seem to be containers that contain trash. I was wondering how these are used prototypically? Do they work from landfills? To where? Are they usually dedicated trains not mixed/manifest trains?

I've got a load of industries in my city and i'm finding uses for them all.. wondering if one could be where you would pick up these kind of wagons but if they are usually dedicated trains then I will build a special industry outside of the city.

Related note: I've got a little scrap yard.. what kind of wagons would be loaded with scrap that I can pick up and take to my main yard with my switcher?

thanks

Where I live (northwest Ohio)it is common to see scrap in gondolas, occasionally retired (google CSX coke express) 100 Ton coal hoppers with extended walls and retired coalgons.... It is just as common to see trash in those containers, but also in open hoppers (again referencing coke express). Most trash around here comes from around the region but is mostly construction byproducts. And goes to a landfill.

How about these kind of trains?

I believe they go directly to a landfill or, in some cases, are burned for electricity. CSX runs trash trains here along the Trenton Line every day, originating in New York City near the NEC near the Hell Gate bridge (I think the area is called Ward Island), going to Virginia and points west. They are dedicated unit trains, at least around here, though CSX will tack 8-10 extra cars onto a mixed freight. Since this is a daily occurrence, I assume power availability determines the length of trains. I have never seen them tacked onto another unit or intermodal train though; just mixed freights. Most of the cars you'll see in the PA/NJ area are 85' flat cars that have DSEX reporting marks (East Carbon Development Company) and are orange.

Jointed Rail has some excellent trash train railcars, if you don't already know.

Look at the section on trash trains here on Wikipedia:

Cheers all. The ones in the shot are from JR I believe. I guess they aren't really suitable for my era and setting (early/mid 90s and Cali). I had just put them in a long train and figured i'd find a home for them as I have a ton of industries and sidings without any use. I thought I could adapt an area for them to be picked up or dropped off too.

I still have a scrap siding but haven't found any US hoppers that will load scrap products in my list when searching for hopper.
Might do a landfill down the line when I have an area with space but no idea how i'd texture it :P

Scrap steel, because of it's weight, is not normally loaded in hoppers, gondolas are the preferred car for scrap metal haulage as they are easier to unload, no sloping ends to trap scrap in the corners. California does have refuge by rail, there is more information here: http://www.lacsd.org/solidwaste/wbr/default.asp and do a Google: California trash trains.

The CSX ones originate in the NYC area, move south to Petersburg, VA, interchanged with NS and moved to Waverly,VA home of the 4th largest landfill, at 2.5+ million tons, in the USA. Others, mainly those containing toxic or radioactive waste, head to Bishopville, SC, where they are equipped to handle that stuff. If you ever have the misfortune of being near one of these be warned they are one of the foulest smelling things on the rails. Basically, NYC was dumping their trash into the ocean, the EPA told them to stop, so now they dump it in rural America. Not as bad as the so-called poo poo choo choo that Baltimore tried to unload, filled with human waste, back in the late 80s.

From what I know BNSF does run trash trains in CA, but these look more like double stack intermodal cars with the tops cut off rather than the JR flatcars.

Haha, I remember the "garbage barge" that was floating around for months. Ewww.

I shall try searching for gondolas, didn't think of them as we don't really use that term over here in the UK.

Davie, JR has gondolas that by default will load scrap, which is the same texture as "trash ground" or "scrap" sorry buy I forget and am away from my computer.

I thought I had all the freeware from JR, I had missed these. Just grabbed them but had to get an asset from TPR that was missing. I wish JR would put dependencies on their site!
