I wanted to download some USGS elevation data (DEM) today and got this message from the server

Tried that, missed the translator program the first time, got it to create a DEM, and of course transDEM says "Error reading DEM". uggh, this is starting to piss me off.

I think I can wait for the fools on the hill to get their act together. I am going to have to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 now. Fun!

Noticed that, too. Was downloading some historic maps the other day, the next day it wasnt possible anymore.
Major DERP!
-.-

As an employee of the Federal Government (the Library of Congress to be exact), this is one minor irritation on top of a laundry list of really big ones!

I think my country has lost most of it's marbles. Or at least the people in Washington, DC have.

This is extraordinary, a bit like the Ordnance Survey in UK shutting down! It's hard to imagine really. As a fellow public servant, I offer my colleagues on the other side of the Atlantic my sincere hope this all ends soon before very real hardship is caused to those who are not being paid.

Did all the "Fat Kat" congressmen each take a huge salary cut, ... or did they just increase their bloated 6 figure salaries, and shaft the taxpayers once again, with a huger' tax increase, in order to balance their "budget" (aka: justifing their bloated salaries) ?

Congress passed the bill. The same night someone turned a switch. USGS web sites back to normal, without delay. I guess a few people kept the servers working all the time.

Because you all will be buying all the congressmen, a new limo, a penthouse suite, and a increase their salary to be 7 figure income. Unfortunately !

They are in it for the big paycheck ... not for the fun of being a politician !

The US government started "rebooting" last night. I work for the Library of Congress, and several of our servers aren't powered up yet because security protocols must be applied. Especially after being dormant for almost three weeks! But that won't take all day, so all of our resources should be available by late afternoon (4pm Eastern Standard Time, USA). I understand that NOAA and OSHA - other sources for great geographic data - will be operational within a few hours. It's 9:20 EST where I am; adjust your mental clocks accordingly.

Everyone came into work this morning and just started turning everything on like it was just a long holiday weekend. Not much else we could have done actually...

Keep on tracking!

Anyone tried using USGS seamless server yet? My first attempt with this, but I keep getting "Error-Could not get order ID. Please try downloading data later." Is it me or something wrong on their end? I read through a tutorial on the transDEM forums, however the interface I am getting is different.
