US Govt shutdown affects Trainz Surveyors!

Anyone tried using USGS seamless server yet? My first attempt with this, but I keep getting "Error-Could not get order ID. Please try downloading data later." Is it me or something wrong on their end? I read through a tutorial on the transDEM forums, however the interface I am getting is different.

They are probably overwhelmed with requests right now if they have opened. I would wait a bit and see what happens.

The interface has changed, but that was some time ago.

Working now, however I have a question/issue. I am trying to download a small area of downtown but it only seems to want to give me a HUGE chunk of the state. I tried "download by bounding box" to draw the square area I need, but it continues to give me a 350 MB file. ????

The new USGS server only gives 1 degree by 1 degree sections now. You used to be able to select increments as smalls as 7.5 minute, IIRC.

Crop or trace the route out. The last DEM I made, I did the latter. That may require merging DEMs if your route is big enough.

This requires a lot of cutting and merging.

TransDem is great for this and once everything is trimmed, it then be trimmed and merged some more in Trainz its self. In the old days we could select what we wanted, but last year they decided to scale down their offerings because it was easier for them to handle the data requests. For us this is quite painful because we don't have the use for such large datasets. What's interesting is according to the NSGS, they were handling over 20,000 requests a month. I wonder how many of those are Trainz users. :)

ok. So I have to download and crop in transdem?
Yes, after or before reading the DEM data. After, with the rectangular mask. Just drag the mask where you want it and click the scissors tool outside the mask. Before - new in TransDEM 2.4 - requires you to know the bounding coordinates of your project when opening the DEM, see image. To obtain those coordinates, start with the map (as recommended in the Quick Start tutorial).

Due to an Amendment to the constitution, even if they would take paycuts Cascade, they wouldnt' go into effect until after the next congressional election.

Well there seems to be something definitively wrong with the system when you consider there have been 17 such ridiculous shut downs. It's not about democracy but power. The level of intelligence of some of the newer people on the Hill from a younger background are stifled grey cell wise. Power and corporates and of course the lobby industry really run things. Having a vote is a give away to keep folks feeling they are included. Consider that 40% of the upper house are multi millionaires and 60% of the lower so Trainz doesn't get a look in never mind the ordinary Joe!! Boy oh boy am I glad I live in a democracy as well as drive my trains with ease :(
