May it’s been during the 40’s as Milwaukee Road’s Quill-Drive-Electric #10300 made its way eastbound pulling a Olympian Hiawatha uphill the 1.7 % grade from Avery to Roland.
The photo shows the train going along Loop Creek Canyon just crossing “Russel Creek Trestle”, while “Barns Creek Trestle” and “Johnson’s Big Cut” appears uphill in the background.

The rock face got its name during construction of the Milwaukee Road. A blast technician named Johnson needed to blast its way through the big rock cliff east of Barns Creek.
About 25000 pound of explosive powder has been touched off as a giant blast threw tons of rock and car sized boulders down the valley and onto the excavation camp #1!
No one has been killed or badly insured but half of the camp was smashed.
Today, long after the Milwaukee Road left the Bitterroots and has eventually wiped out, the rock boulders still remains at the position where once had been the tents of the excavation camp #1.

Route: Milwaukee Road Avery – Drexel (released within TS2010 as builtin – but here running in TS12)
