Upload file size?

I know this has been here before but I can't find it. Does anybody know what the exact maximum file size is allowed for an uploaded route to the DLS?

The reason I ask is that my WCL 2 was over 87 Mb and that was only just over half done. I am considering finishing that section now, once I have Bristol Temple Meads finished, I will need something to keep me out of trouble!

I had thought of splitting it in two, WCL2a and WCL2b, but it means an awful lot of work deleteing boards first on one side and then on the other to get the two halves, and there are a mass of boards(!), so I would prefer to keep it as one solid lump if possible.

Perhaps the 'Powers that be' at Auran could advise me?

I have already checked the heights at merge with WCL 1 and set that to rights, there was a slight difference.

Bless you all,

Angela

My understanding is that it is 20Mb as compressed in the Cdp file. I've had routes rejected at 22Mb, which is why some are hosted elsewhere. You can make special arrangements with Auran, but I think you have to mail it to them on a CD or something.

Cheers

Cheers guys for helping, much appreciated.

I had an idea it was about that size but wasn't sure.

What is certain is that the second section will be well over the 100Mb mark by the time it's done, it's over 87Mb now and only just a bit over halfway.
This is a big section, much to my surprise, and takes a long time to drive along it. At the end it's 110 miles from Paddington, but the end is past Westbury.
It may need shortening back to another large'sih town, but it really is a horrendous and time consuming job - twice!
I haven't counted the amount of boards but it's hundreds on each delete.

Mmmmm..... she muses.....!!*?$"^&***......... and mutters.....

Bless you both,

Angela

Cutting out

Hi angelah,
Have you thought of uploading in sections simler to the yorkshire maps?

Hello,
As you will see from my posts I am trying to avoid that because the section is a one-piece DEM. To seperate it into two means taking out one square at a time and there are hundreds.

I didn't make the DEMs and I am sure the person who did never forsaw this problem otherwise they would have been made smaller.
The first section was about 84 or so Mb I think, but this one will be considerably more as it is in one chunk.

I will have to think about it.... The process of removing squares is quite slow because it means hitting Ctrl+M to bring the overview map up, move to the right square, close the map and then delete, and that is necessary nearly every time if you don't want to make a mistake. It isn't possible to replace a DEM square after it's deleted....

Thanks for posting though,

Angela

Hi George --

My PortOgden cdp is 38.34MB in size and uploaded without any problem.

Angela --

In times past when the maximum upload was smaller I contacted Lance Jago (remember him?) and arranged to post a CD to him with the route.

Just a thought though - downloading 100MB+ might be a big ask for some peoples.

Hello Phil,
Yes, I realise that. But it will be a complete nightmare halving this section into 2 units. probably take days....

Yes, I did know I could get in touch with somebody at Auran, just thought I would ask for some suggestions.

This section is long, longer than the first and has full scenery, so it would be worth the effort - she says, knowingly....

If you have none of my routes, try one, and you will see how I do them. These sections are created on one PC while looking at Google Earth on another, so they are rather modern but detailed.

Cheers anyway,

Angela

Upload size limit !!!

Hi Angelah,
Surely someone from Auran can answer this simple question. (What is the current upload size limit for a route)???
I know we talked about this issue six to nine months ago Angelah. (the size limit being to low, etc)...
With routes getting increasing larger and more detailed it's about time that Auran increased the size to atleast 120 - 150 mgs. (Personally I think it should be 200+ megs).
I understand that this will create problems for some of the community that are still on dailup, or don't have a FCT. Surely this would encourage more people to get broadband and a FCT.
(the more people that have FCT's, the more revenue to Auran). To me, a win - win situation all around !!!
Someone might need to PM or e-mail Tony to get an answer...
Cheers, Mac...

It says quite plainly on the "Your Content"/"Upload" page;

File format: .cdp or .cdp2 (compiled with Content Dispatcher)
Maximum Filesize: 50mb

I guess Auran could put it more up front rather than buried 2 pages into the upload process...but then it wouldn't be the Auran we know and love.
:o

That notwithstanding, at least 2 of my routes are well above that 'limit' so it seems Auran are conscious of the fact that routes can get larger now.
They never got in contact with me regarding the file size either.
But as said, now it would be prudent to increase to at least 100Mb.

Angela,

Is the 87 MB the compressed size of the route - the CDP, or the uncompressed size?

This makes a big difference. My personal route, not for upload, is 48 MB uncompressed, but when made into a CDP, it's only 28 MB, or roughly 58% of the actual size.

They are the cdp file sizes, look on the DS. WCL section 1 and WCL 2 part done.

But I have bitten the bullet and cut the second section into two halves now.

Yikes! That is a big route, Angela. Too bad you have to chop it up. I hope you kept a full version just in case there's some out there who will be kind enough to host the complete route for you. ;)

John

It must surely be more of a question of download times, I am on broadband and the updated Fort William - Mallaig route was 30MB and took over an hour

Hello John,
Anybody can run this as a complete chunk, just merge the 2 sections.
Once BTM is done I shall return to WCL section 2a and complete it having adjusted the slight height difference where the tracks meet. It's not much, but needs doing.
That will take you to Pewsey where there is a crossover after the station.
So don't hold your breath, it is going to be a while yet.

Blessings,

Angela

I will hold my breath waiting. I really like your routes. :) :D
There are very few that I have downloaded and kept after driving them once or twice. ;)

That is a very nice thing to say and thank you. I try...
Have just run from Paddington to North Brewham stopping at Reading for 2 minutes, Pewsey for 30 seconds and a brief stay of about the same at Westbury. It took 1 hour 6 minutes. And surprisingly ran well with a half decent frame rate providing I cut down the usual Preferences.
Lots to do yet though so I really do think you should take some breaths....
I am trying to get the first half of the second section done now. It was well on the way to being done so it has given me some impetus to complete it.
The second half is still a plain DEM, well, as plain as DEMs are...

Two more routes on the go at the same time so I am splitting myself into three!

Bless you,

Angela
