UP Interests Me

Ever sense it's conception, back in the 1800s, the Union Pacific has interested me. After much debate and talk, it's been confirmed the very first train I saw was a UP train.
Locally, I have the Union Pacific Villa Grove Sub to the East, and the Joliet Sub to the West. They have always been one of the large powered railroads. I mean, what other railroad had a Big Boy and a DD40AX? Additionally, they are still around celebrating their 150th anniversary this year!

What interests you about Union Pacific. For me, it's the shear fact one name can hold so many images and meanings.*

Yes the Union Pacific is one of my favorites. The fact that it is the only Railroad company thats name has survived over so many mergers. And that its paint scheme hasn't changed either, plus yellow is my favorite color.

I'll say this: As much as I hate them for buying out my favorite railroad (The MKT) In retaliation for stonewalling the UP/Rock Island merger hearings for ten years...which they did for good reasons mind you, for if the CRI&P had merged into the UP, the Katy would have been surrounded and never could have survived...I do have to say they have some awesome locomotive designs in their history. the Big Boy, the Challengers, the FEFs, Gas Turbines, U50s, DDA40Xs (I've climbed all over one of those...they're AWESOME) heck, they got it all. Even their old lowly Mikes look good.
 
Yeah, I really like the UP, one reason was that it lasted so long and the fact that it has my second favorite locomotive MT-73 4-8-2, number one being the SP 4-10-2 being that the only one left is near where I live, but the point is that I love the UP and will never truly hate the company

Anyway, I love the UP, it was the first American Train I saw (apart from the Disneyland one) when my family was driving along the Cajon. I think it was a great move absorbing and buying companies rather than competing with them. Their colours are nice, and they have still strived throughout all problems in the US (I may not be a pro on US History, but I'm sure there has been a few(To say the least))

Probably one of the best logos, is the UP wing logo. It's really a shame that their phasing it out on new units. It's hard to replace a big 'ol logo. Same for the American flag. Shame people in California spray graffiti over it.

I'm a fan of railroads, but no modern ones in particular. I would have preferred to see the D&RGW take over of SP to materialize into something like the Rio Pacific, or some combination, rather than a total name drop simply due to name recognition. If that were the case, the modern day UP name probably wouldn't exist as we know it, with Rio Grande still being a major part of the name, somehow. But I digress, and even though I don't think the UP yellow is the most attractive paint color that is what makes it recognizable.

As long as they continue running over the Provo-Helper branch, I'm happy.
 
BNSF is better! It has more famous men, it's patches are better, and it has a very attractive paint job. And various other things.

But UP is ok.
 
BNSF doesn't care about things out here. They overran a depot, ripped up decent crossing signals, and whatnot. Plus, they put e-bells on their rebuilt units whereas UP kept original cast EMD bells on their freshly rebuilt SD40-2s.

True, BNSF has a nice paint job, I can say that UP does have the better logo. (wing logo) ...unless your talking about H2. I like the H2 logo on the side of the units.

BNSF does have a very nice history. ATSF and BN were very great railroads, and so where the predecessors to BN. I wonder how BNSF came to be how it is. (behavior-wise) BN and ATSF were never in the mind state BNSF is in.

Now you know my take on BNSF. Please, feel free to contradict me and tell me your points on BNSF.

Actually, no. That's why I'm confused. They ripped up the Safetran equipment (which is decent stuff) and put down brand new US&S equipment. The US&S model 95 gate mech is horrid. It's motor is too small and struggles when the gate needs to be raised... The Safetran was from 1990s installations. That's not that new, and I'm just really confused. It's not like they even did anything with it. I saw a lot of it just hiding behind fenced lots. It's not like the Safetran equipment didn't work, because it did.

so without going too terribly far back in history to prove the point: notice how UP now is really DRGW if you look at it a certain way?

DRGW buys SP from ATSF -> changes name to SP

UP merges with SP -> SP is surviving company, changes name to UP.


CSX and NS i know for sure have certain areas that are basically still run like the parent companies were.

the only thing about Union Pacific that lives on is the name, mergers will always bring about something new.
