UK Screenshots (Hi Res Version)

Going back in time...

Paul (Paulsw2),

I think you should strongly consider posting one of the winter scenes in your posting (#13911) yesterday to the "Screenshot of the Week: 12/28/2012 to 1/5/2013" competition. This week's theme is " Winter shots". My favourite would be the last one (the yard).

I would really like to see more British and Irish screenshots and voters on Screenshot of the Week (especially British and Irish Steam) as it is really quite US diesel oriented at present.

Peter.

lewisner,

Happy New Year!

I know I'm in for trouble asking this, but could you please tell me (and I'm sure others) what the name of route was that you are re-doing (with Sunderland etc. in it), where it (The older version) can be found and when you estimate you will have completed the rebuild.

I know you gave a few details about on page 910, but no name. I can't see any assets by lewisner on the DLS (or anywhere else, I've looked). Do you have a webpage?

I can see loads of screenshots of this route (or these routes?) here and on Flickr, videos of YouTube and I'm sure I'm not the only one that is tantalised beyond endurance.

Peter.

Hi Peter, my route is imaginatively called "Sunderland Route" (catchy eh?) and I started it in late 2004. I had no idea that you had to have correct elevations and NSEW orientation so it is facing the wrong way and is too high. I didn't use a Terrain Map so the terrain is done by hand. I've done modifications to a lot of things such as turning the signals BR(NE) grey and altering the trackside values. The net result of this is that if I were to put it on the DLS everything I have altered would either revert or disappear, or I would have to seek out the authors and ask permission to upload the content. To my shame I have never created a single Trainz asset because when I try to understand Gmax or Terrain maps my brain simply fuses.
So, the only thing I could do is to start the route afresh, learn to use Terrain Maps, learn to use Gmax or whatever they call it nowadays. I reckon it would take me 2 years to do it?

Edit* Do you think this looks any good?

lewisner*,

So even the older version never showed up on the DLS (or anywhere else), right? That certainly explains why I couldn't find it under your ID or anyone else's (I checked for "Sunderland" and many other possible names), for that matter.

A pity, it looks so good, I could forgive the incorrect orientation and elevation and just treat it as if it were a fictional line (at least until the more prototypically correct version comes out) - I should have a couple of years in this 66-year-old body, I guess!

> Do you think this looks any good?

Well, the line, train and scenery (apart from
the nearer bushes - 'best to use higher resolution ones nearer the line) look wonderful, but the picture has an odd fuzzy quality to it (for TS2010, or TS12 which I am now used to). Is that just due to the "camera" following the moving train or is it an effect of using TS2010 compatibility mode?

Are the screenshots you've been posting from the new version in progress or the from old one?

It occurs to me that, if you are expecting to take another two years to complete the route, you should upgrade to TS12 now as new TS12 routes are already appearing on the DLS and you will find that a lot of the assets you have had to correct have newer corrected and improved versions available in TS12.

I presume a route-builder would not need any permissions to use others' assets (available publicly on the DLS or elsewhere) on his/her uploaded route (if unmodified) - I'm open to correction that, but have always assumed it to be so.

Could you just list all the names of the stations on your route, so we can see the geographical extent, please?

And ... keep up the good work - we're all looking forward to it (and shall try not to pester you too much along the way)!

Peter

* Sorry, I can't find your forename anywhere - the profile don't seem to show them anymore.

Here's a pair of "Rats" heading past Penshaw

To answer your questions "Are the screenshots you've been posting from the new version in progress or the from old one?" Its the same route I started in 2004. Only the baseboards remain, virtually everything has been changed, in some cases several times. "It occurs to me that, if you are expecting to take another two years to complete the route, you should upgrade to TS12 now as new TS12 routes are already appearing on the DLS and you will find that a lot of the assets you have had to correct have newer corrected and improved versions available in TS12." I don't expect to ever complete the route! My enthusiasm for Trainz has waned and as for TS12 I have TS10 but have never used it because of Speed Trees. I really can't be bothered struggling to put things back to the way I built them."I presume a route-builder would not need any permissions to use others' assets (available publicly on the DLS or elsewhere) on his/her uploaded route (if unmodified) - I'm open to correction that, but have always assumed it to be so." My understanding is that you MUST seek permission from the Creators of assets if you intend to upload a route using them and ESPECIALLY if you have modified or reskinned them.
"Could you just list all the names of the stations on your route, so we can see the geographical extent, please? If you look at the map below my route comprises Sunderland to Leamside and Sunderland to Murton, and Hall Dene on the Seaham line plus the Ryhope Colliery branch and Lumley NCB branch.

Hi Lewisner,
You do not need permission for assets included on a route if they are on the DS, but you DO need permission if you have altered or reskinned them and if on a route you intend to upload because you must also upload the modified asset.
Like you I hate Speedtreez so don't use 2010 much although I suppose I could use it in Compatability mode although again I am not sure if the trees I place (Trunda and JVC) would still be changed, I think they do get altered to speedtrees. So could N3V please give users the option as to whether or not these awful things (apart from a few content creator made ones) are used in route. I mean. you spend hours placing trees you like and then they promptly get changed..!! VERY annoying...¬
Gmax isn't so bad, I learned how to use it at around 70 years of age and am still going strong quite a few years later. I admit that when I first opened it my brain froze as well *many insist it stayed that way...) but with a bit of help (read a lot...) I got my head around it and love it, the prog is soooo creative.
I would be willing to help you get started if you feel like having a bash and believe me, a whole new world opens up before you - and all your spare time evaporates... ha ha. You will start looking at buildings and converting them into Gmax models, I did and people were giving me some very odd looks as I stood gawping at the Civic Centre or church for ages. PM me.

Blessings,

Angela

Hi Angelah, I don't want to be a "Speedtreez bore" but I still bear the scars....I remember when I installed TS10 and opened it up, my jaw literally dropped when I saw months of work carefully locating trees replaced by acres of swaying Triffids. I still don't understand how Auran thought it was OK to set the game up in such a way that you had to "opt out" of it or otherwise see your own work dramatically altered?
Thanks for offer re Gmax but I will have to decline. Like I said earlier my enthusiasm for Trainz has waned considerably and I don't think I really want to rekindle it to that extent. In the case of the shot of Claude Hamilton I posted earlier, when I got TC3 I immediately set about altering it to my own tastes; I replaced all the telegraph poles and fences, rebuilt every station including Skipton and Carlisle remodelled London Road Junction completely and improved the packing of the embankments under the track. Not content with that, I built Kirkby Stephen East which took 2 weeks by itself. This took me about 8 months. Like "god" I looked on it, and it was good. Then.....something happened and the entire Route became a "ghost" - it still exists but my PC says it is "Read Only" and if I try to open it TC3 says "Error No Map Selected". So , I effectively wasted 8 months of work. I've no wish to repeat this experience.
Rant over, here is 9012 Crepello leaving Sunderland headed south. BTW I have replaced all my track with UK Bullhead 09 and it shows up as dark or light depending on which direction the track is laid in :'(

Hi Lew,

Can't the orientation of the route be altered by adding or changing the world origin co-ordinates?

PS I prefer the slightly softer look of TC3 screenshots.

Chris.

Hi Chris that may be possible (!) - I know that question has been asked before but I have never heard that idea 'thinks'.
Regarding the texture thing I think , though it has been two years at least since I took that screenshot, that I may have tried to Enhance it in Photoshop. I have found that for some reason this always has a negative effect on the colour, so I never do it now.

Oh Nexus, how you brought back some great memories from the days on the coast during the 90s... How I miss those days so much...
