ugly trains

They're not replacing the Acela's, they're replacing the AEM-7s and HHP-8s, but not for a few years.

Actually AEM-7 retirement will probably begin late this year. There are 2 batches of AEM-7s to get thru and then they'll start with the HHP-8s; but even then they won't be straight retired (Amtrak doesn't own them, they're leased) they'll be relegated to backups, yard work & things like that. Starting March we'll probably begin seeing 3 ACS-64s leave Sacramento each month.

By the way the 1st revenue run for the ACS-64s is tomorrow (Friday 2-7) on train #171.

But remember, we were FIRST and that is why our loading gauge is so small because of our early tunnels and bridges. Out of interest the tunnel out of Southampton station has had to be enlarged at considerable cost to allow the passage of the latest container trains. Also we cannot have double deck passenger trains for the same reason (Bulleid's attempt to do so was a failure).

No ill-intentions here, I was just saying it's strange when you put them next to each other. British trains are wonderful in their own right, they have a certain charm and elegance to them that NA trains don't. If I had to describe the latter I'd use; brute beasts.

Although I don't think that particular Class 66 was British, as the only bright yellow operator here is Network Rail and they don't have any 66's

Getting back to the subject of ugly trains - probably the ugliest booster. The main reason is that it's a shabby cut and mend from an old locomotive.

Not sure why they did this to a poor locomotive:
