Two Questions!

1) Every time i get to the point (when trs2006 is loading) that a tip appears on the screen and the cog is turning, the cog stops and the game 'not responding'. Why is this happening?

2) If some thing is 'open for edit' does that mean it will not appear in the game? If so how do i close it?

If you leave the game on that loading screen for a while, it may start. Sometimes TRS06 has to re-write it's database of content when it starts, which can happen during this time and can take a long while.

As for content that is open for edit. To 'close it', you select all items that are open for edit, and go CTRL + M, or right click on one of them, go down to edit, and click on commit.

For 1, search the forum for assets.tdx, this may be the problem.
