TS2010 SP3 patch restarts my pc

hi all

whenever i try to install this new patch, it restarts my computer.

i have the latest version with sp2 in it.
i have nothing running when i try to install it from the desktop

can somebody please tell me what i'm doing wrong.

Hi Ron,

Please make sure that you are running the latest XP service pack version (XP sp3) as that is the minimum spec for TS2010. There are known compatibility problems in the earlier XP versions.

i cannot do sp3

if i install it then some of my other software goes haywire

i'll just have to make do with sp2

i am running 2010 on xp pro with sp2 only

Few people seem to understand that Vista/W7 breaks a lot of stuff.

After nearly 30 years of running Microsoft products, my relationship ends with Windows XP, apart from the necessary professional support my profession requires for the later versions.

Yes, it's that bad.

So bad that I've begun (shudder, holding nose) to learn Snow Leopard.

My experience on updating to XP sp3 was as you describe, some of the installed software went wonky. I saved the data from these programs and uninstalled them. I then updated to sp3 and re-installed the programs and all was well, didn't cost anything only a bit of time.

Depending upon the age of your PC and the nature of the problems with the other software, you could consider Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007. When I got a new PC with Win7 64 bit installed I discovered that my old image editing software (Corel Photopaint and Draw V8) wouldn't run properly, even with all compatability options tried. I installed Virtual PC 2007 (which works OK despite the warning you get about it not being supported on Win7), chucked on an old copy of Windows 2000 from a scrapped PC and then installed CorelDraw onto it. It works a treat.

Virtual PC probably wouldn't be appropriate for anything requiring good 3D performance since I believe it emulates a PC with only 8MB VRAM, but for other compatibility issues it might be worth a try.

You do have to work a bit to find it if you've got Win7, because MS want you to upgrade to a higher version of Win7 and use Windows XP Mode instead, but you can download it from here:

It can be used on XP Pro so you may wish to consider upgrading your PC OS to XP Pro to SP3, then putting your old software into Virtual PC on with XP Pro SP2 in it. This would be quite a major step so don't try it unless you're sure of all the implications, including licensing, but Virtual PC was a useful solution for me. You could also consider VMWare, which works similarly and I believe is also available in a free version. Alternatively you could just try DaveW's solution!

have tried a demo version of the vm desktop , but had problems with it.

i had not heard of virtual desktop.
will give it a test when i get the time

so i went back to sp2
