TS2009- surveyor issues

Hi;
I have been playing with TS2009 since November, and have found some annoying bugs that are starting me thinking about going back to TS2006.

In Surveyor, while using the terrain tools, I regularly see the ground disappear in large sections, leaving only a light blue "nothingness".
Sometimes the ground pops back in automatically as I move around, but sometimes it does not.

Another thing I dislike is the lack of fluid motion when using the terrain tools with 5m grid. Ground moves kind of like an older game where processor power is lacking.

I am not running a cutting edge system, but it was plenty good enough for TS2006.

About the only thing keeping me from going back to TS2006 is the huge route I created, then imported into TS2009 and have been working on in TS2009 for about 2 months now. I would lose a hell of a lot of work if I went back now.

Hi fwassner,

In Surveyor, while using the terrain tools, I regularly see the ground disappear in large sections, leaving only a light blue "nothingness".

We've had this report from a few people and are actively looking for a solution. Unfortunately, this seems to be quite machine-specific so it's taking us a little while to track down the exact cause. Bear with us on this one :-)

You've pretty much answered your own question here. You're asking the CPU to do four times as much work, so it's taking a little longer to respond. A faster CPU would help here if this is a real problem for you.

Thanks for the feedback,

chris

Did you try open gl mode?
I've been running Open GL and DirectX, both have the same issue.
I am going to see if there is an update for my video card, but it hasn't been very long since the last time I checked and found nothing newer than what I am running.

Thanks for the info. I'm also going to check my drivers, but I think I already have the latest.

My computer is 4yrs old now. It's 3.6G Multi-threading, but not multi core Pentium. 3Gigs DDR, 256MB GeForce 6800 video.
I am thinking a video upgrade would suit me best, but right now I'm not going to spend the $$ for a new one.
I'll just have to stick with the 10m grid if I want good performance.

I updated my video (Nvidia) drivers today, but still have the problem with the blue neverworld showing up during terrain creation.
I have found that I get fewer instances of this when I do not zoom all the way out, so I am working a bit closer in.
If you would like, I can try different things with TS2009 and my system to help you troubleshoot this issue.

My system:
P4 Hyper-threading 3.4Ghz on Asus P5AD2E Premium mobo
3G DDR memory
Nvidia GeForce 6800 256MB (BFG)
RAID0 configuration of SATA drives (3.6Gig total)
Viewsonic VX2000 LCD monitor

Other 2009 Surveyor Issues

Hello,

System : Core2Duo 3.0Ghz - 4MB Ram - GTX 280 - 2.0 PCIE
Trainz : TS2009 +SP1 +Patch - Open GL - No shadow - compatibility on - 1920x1080 - Draw distance 3500m - fog, default +1

OK, like all of us here, I can only comment how TS2009 runs on my system.

Blue Ground Issue :
I was told that this issue is being worked on and should be a part of SP2. Currently any large change is viewpoint location causes the "blue ground" to happen in various duration. On my large route, it can take some time. Long enough that it is faster to exit and re-load Surveyor.

The "blue ground", in my case, never goes back to normal after every "save", so I have to exit and re-load.

The LOOKS of all TREES changed (post Patch upgrade) :

For the last 18 months, I've been building my route. I payed VERY close attention towards the selection of TREES. I was careful to select trees that were close in color/hues so that the TREES I selected were fewer in variety but were use in LARGE numbers. I was doing a really good job by choosing trees that were most natural looking and pleasing . . . UNTIL the UPDATE PATCH !!

The HUES of the trees remained the same but the CONTRAST changed a good deal. Again, this is the difference I immediately saw after the "Patch". The dark side (looking towards the sun) is darker than it used to be, and the lighter side (looking away from the sun) is lighter than it used to be (therefore the apparent increase in contrast). The result is just plain UGLY AS SIN !!!!!!

These were trees that used to look nice at low viewing angles . . . Now its dreadful !! What used to look somewhat natural looking, now looks very artificial and un-natural. Very disappointed !

The "COPY and PASTE" function not working :
The OBJECTS are no longer being rotated while being pasted. If I start with a ROW of objects oriented East - West and paste this ROW as North - South orientation, the ROW is pasted correctly with the NEW orientation but the INDIVIDUAL object in the row RE NOT rotated. Very annoying. I'm sure this will be fixed in time . . . but its not currently working with the Patch.

Floating/buried objects :
This is an intermittent problem. From time to time, not always, the object elevations are improperly DISPLAYED. The height of the objects HAVE NOT ACTUALLY been CHANGED. If you use your compass point far enough away from the improperly displayed objects and move back, the RE-DISPLAYED objects returns back to its proper elevations.

It me a while to realize that this was just a DISPLAY ERROR and I did not need to erase and fix something that SEEMED to be buried under ground or floating above ground. All I had to do was move far enough away and come back . . . then back to normal.

- - - - - -

These are the three major annoyance and disappointments so far. But . . . considering how much things have improved, I still have to say that Auran is doing a good job.

I hope SP2 will take a hard look at these major issues.

Just my thoughts.

I've had this (disappearing baseboards problem) pretty consistently since first installing TS2009 (and still after SP1), on 2 different desktops (A Sony Viao and a CyperPower), with 2 and 4 GB of RAM respectively, with low and high end nVidia cards both running first some older then the latest drivers. It happens frequently during cab rides (at least a few times per session), and in Surveyor immediately after saving. It happens on three different large layouts imported from TS2006.

I do wonder if it's related to the presence of a lot of assets that are broken even in compatibility mode (including invisible locomotives and other rolling stock). At this point I'm pretty much leaving 2009 alone until this one gets nailed.

I find that the blue squares issue disappears almost completely if you don't work with zoom fully out. I run my mouse wheel in a couple of clicks, and start working, no blue squares.

On my very large route, I am not working with terrain tools, and I have not had the problem with other tools, such as paint and objects.

Hopefully, SP2 will be out soon.

This problem existed with TRS2004 and TRS2006 as well, and happens when leveling the ground under splines. The ground lifts up or down, and the static objects suchas buildings, trees, and industries don't move with the ground.

I've worked around the problem by choosing the topology tool and then choosing the plateau tool. In TS2009 I click it once and the objects "settle" down into place like they should be. In TRS2006 I used to click on the leveling tool under topology after getting the ground height and then clicking on the ground.

I hope this helps.

I have found that issue as well. Seems to be more of a video display than with Trainz.
One thing that I still have trouble with is some objects are placed initially too high or too low, and I can only move them up or down in 1m increments.
I have a number of soccer players on a field, and they all were placed much too high off the ground. I have moved them closer to the ground, but if I try to move them onto the ground, they just sink into the ground partway.

Hold either the shift or Ctrl key to adjust the height increments. Shift for 5 cm and Ctrl for 10 cm.

Regarding the blue ground...

I have that issue too with my system:

Quad Core Intel 2.66 GHZ
4GB RAM
Vista 64Bit
2x 1TB Drives
NVidia 8800 GTS
SoundBlaster Audigy Live Sound
Latest patches and drivers from maufacturers and MS.
Nothing is overclocked.

I have also found a way to make the ground redraw quicker.

1) Go to the texture tool where you pick textures.
2) Pick the current texture you have on the ground using the pick tool.
3) Adjust your brush accordingly, and start placing the texture down like you normally do.

The dispaly will flash as the texture brush puts the textures down and the ground will suddenly appear.

There's another thing I notied with the blue ground.

Place an industry active or LARS rolligstock. Oddly a long spike extends into the blue that makes the rollingstock look like it is connected to rods. I just notcied this the other night when I was populating my route.

I recently had this issue when I changed the track on the layout I am building. As soon as I replaced the track with the new one everything dissappeared and took along time to re-appear.

I replaced the new track with the old one and everything went back to normal, so I guess it's connected to some assetts some how.

The original track is the built-in Auran 2009 Track,
The New track was CHN concrete 02.

How can I add my question in forum?

You will want to use the Create New Thread option at the top of the forum relating to the part of Trainz (or Trainz version) you require assistance with (you may want to use the search feature first though in case your question has already been answered).
