TS2009 build 40040 Surveyor problems

Hi All
This is my first post to the forum.

I recently patched TS2009 build 35899 to build 40040 (SP2). I am attemting to build a route using some displacement maps I have made. The maps have been installed into the displacement folder, they are of the correct format i.e. 256x256 bmp.

The problem is that they do not appear in the displacement menu in the advanced section of the topography flyout in surveyor, all that is showing are the built in displacements and a custom category which just shows a blank image.

I have installed the exact same displacements into TC3 and everything works OK so it's not my displacement maps that are the problem.

Please does anybody have any ideas/thoughts or is this a known problem with build 40040.

Thanks,

Rob.

OOps. Idon't think youshould have installed that patch yet. We,ve been told to wait(us38599ers) for the sp2 patch. See auran sp2 patch details.

Hi baz66

The patch is available as a manual download and nowhere have I read or seen a warning against using it. Is there a further patch to be expected to fix this patch - I wonder.

It's a good job Auran don't go in for roof repair!

Thanks for the reply,

Rob.

Baz66, can you post a link to the warning against using the manual patch for 38599, please.
I have just patched and I'm not having any problems. However, I haven't tried adding displacements.

Cheers

Build 40040 is TRS2009WBE SP2 RC2 (release candidate 2).

A release candidate has been through beta testing but hasn't yet been tested by a large number of users. Therefore it comes with some degree of uncertainty as to its reliability. It's fine for testing and playing, but not intended for serious layout creation.

Thanks John.
There was no such warning or asterisk alongside the download link. That really sucks. I would not have upgraded if I'd been made aware of the beta status.

I'm going back to 38599.

Cheers

theirs a service pack 2 for us unitedstaters?
SP2 for TS2009WBE is currently being prepared. It's passed beta testing but is stuck at the Release Candidate stage, I think due to problems with its installer. Depending on what build you have now, you might be able to install it but be aware that it is only intended for courageous users and not yet suitable for serious layout creation. It might be less painful to wait for the official release.

If you wish, post your current build number here and someone will be able to give you more specific advice.

john,

why i ask is because,
i opened trainz 2009 to the menu and it says a brand new patch is available .
so can i download it ?

if i do, what problems could i experience?

Wow, did this thread go off topic in a hurry.

TS2009 SP2 does not read the World/Custom folder and add content there to the Trainz Asset Database at startup anymore like older versions. This is a part of a move away from having assets outside of the TAD. There is now a new asset kind "GroundBrush" for creating displacement maps available in CCP.

Choose New from the file menu in CM2 and a new asset will be created and opened for edit in CCP. Choose GroundBrush as the type. Fill in the fields for the config.txt. Here are mine:

kuid <kuid:xxxxxx:1044> This will be created for you.
username "Displacement Map 2" Choose your own name here.
trainz-build 2.9
category-class "JO"
category-region "US"
category-era "2000s;2010s"
kind "groundbrush"
displacement-bitmap "f_001.BMP"

Before you can choose your bitmap at the bottom you must copy your image to the folder that is open in your TS2009 folder's Editing folder. This should be called New Asset at the moment. Now you can choose the image in the requester. Save the config and exit CCP. Now commit your new asset and you will be in business.

By the way, the bitmaps don't have to be 256 x 256. They can be larger up to 2048 x 2048 which is quite useful on a 5m grid. They can also be jpeg files too.

Uninstall. Reinstall. AFAIK there's no other way :(

John

Yep, that's it. But remember to create an archive of your existing assets before you uninstall.

However, after further consideration, I have changed my mind. I think I'll stay with the manual patch.
There is no indication that anything is different in the auto patch, so it seems as though it would just be a waste of time.

Thanks for the Displacement info William. Good stuff!

Cheers

SP2????

I got the new patch window when I started TS09 tonight and tried to download it:eek: It went through the usual download actions until it got to actually downloading the file then it stopped dead.
Reading the above comments I'm pretty pleased it did stop, I will now wait a while befor attempting to download SP2.:)

Bit of a pigs ass regarding the warnings about it not being ready for general use yet????

I'm have just had a problem trying to run the patch it got to JAcontenter and then stop. with a message of failed.
I go to try to use sp2 and see if that will load.

I think you should post your problems with the patch in the TS2009 Support Forum. I don't think anyone that could help would be looking here in this thread. This thread is about displacement maps in surveyor.

William

Not really. This thread was more about being careful about what you download. Read all instructions.

No, I'm sorry that is not correct. Rob's original post was about the fact that his newly created displacement maps weren't showing up in Surveyor. Your post is what misdirected the topic by implying his problem might be due to having downloaded the 40040 patch. When in fact his issue was as I answered him due to a change in the way the displacement maps are handled in SP2.

While it is true that unless you want to deal with bugs most users shouldn't download and install beta patches. Build 40040 was an Release Candidate that Auran and the beta testers had found to be quite stable and therefore safe to release for wide use by the community. It in fact became SP2 with no changes that I am aware of.

The only warning I have seen made by Auran with regard to beta patches is that it is strongly advised not to use them for any content creation that you can't afford to lose if the beta patch goes horribly wrong. If you're building a route for example you should stick to major releases.

In general I agree with your advice. You should be careful about using beta patches. A couple of the early SP2 betas had serious issues and caused more than one person to lose the route they were working on to a crash that corrupted the file.

The purpose of my comment was to suggest that if you are having issues getting the patch to work it would better to post in the TS2009 support forum rather than here since the Surveyors, Operators and Engineers forum isn't really a place that you are likely to get a lot of help with patches. While there are several active threads about patching problems in the support forum.
