TS12 and the pain that will come...

I've been flirting with coming back, especially with growth I've been seeing in the great content.

The thing that's stopping me or that has me on the fence is, that once I purchase TS12, I'll have to deal with DLS or Content Manager and it's absolutely horrid speed, if you're not a first class ticket holder.

I tested a file which was less than 2mb in size and it would take over 5mins to d/l!? I can only image how long it would take to download a route.

Am I really over thinking this? I know I can get a 1st Class ticket but it still feels painful for some reason. Maybe I've been gone for too long..lol

Hi Jaleel

Nice to see one of the 'oldies' on the forum.

Frankly I don't think Trainz is viable any more if you don't have a FCT and the download speeds it allows. And if a FCT is beyond your budget, then I suspect so would be the cost of the game itself.

I hope you can find the money for both.

Considering Jaleel's past involvement in Trainz surely the cost of a ticket for a year is hardly earth shattering? I suspect he is more at odds with the principle of the thing perhaps? When you think what people spend at some fast food place or on a drink or whatever without thinking much of it a goodly bargani for people. Personally I reckon it worth it for a great hobby and when periodic ill-health comes in a great boost.

Always nice to see someone slip back in!

Money isn't the problem. I know I won't have much time to invest in trainz as I've had in the beginning. Because of that, I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the investment when I see content I would like to use but my FCT is expired. As Deane, said you really need it to even enjoy Trainz at this point, which is a shame.

I really would love to enjoy the multiplayer aspect of the game! Something I was wishing for the longest!

I wish they had a free monthly quota, 20-25MB a month which had full speed. I just know the size of content has gone way up and the slow speed of using DLS or CM can be a put off for some users. Not to mention the overall cost, game + ftc. I guess this is an old debate too though...lol

Howdy Jaleel,

Nice to see an old friend here in the forums. :D

Check the specials. N3V for awhile had free 1 year tickets with TS12. Perhaps you could pick up the program then. This would surely cut down on the investment cost. I'm not sure if it's available right now; I haven't checked recently.

The speed of the DLS has not changed even from the old days. Without a ticket, it is still that snail-paced slow download. The thing is in some ways you do need an FCT today due to the size of the files in the downloads today. A building for example is no longer 300kb. Instead buildings can run 2-3MB and up, which really adds up fast without a ticket, and with that amount of data being sent down the pipe at 1-3kb, you'll grow old before it shows up on your hard drive.

Several times in a lifetime...

we (if we are fortunate) come across a service whose value far exceeds its price. For me:

1. A one-year First Class Ticket
2. Satellite radio

Are you posting from one of those "Occupy My Butt" protests or something? C'mon, you know how it works; if wishes were horses the world would be covered in...:D

Hi Jaleel-

I'm a fairly new guy, but let's put it this way. Let's say, worst case, you lay down $50 for the game and $30 for a 1-year FCT. What does $80 buy you today?

2 tickets to an amateur hockey game (ECHL)

4 tickets to a movie. If you're talking 3D, plan on sneaking in candy and soda in your jacket.

2 roundtrips and 1 one-way from NYC to Princeton Junction.

1 A couple good hours at Dave & Buster's. Maybe.

0 tickets to a pro-hockey game (after fees, before it's about $70)

0 tickets to a pro-football game

And you'll easily get more hours of enjoyment out of Trainz!

You have a very valid point! I'll see when the next promo is then I'll get it. Takes a touch of the sting off.

I think anyone without FCT is pretty much out in the cold. While testing my route and the multiplayer session I installed both into a virgin copy of TS12, then downloaded all dependencies for route and multiplayer session - with FCT took about 2 hours, something like 450 megabytes worth of assets.

I've compared the FCT to the "member's clubs" at certain popular payware sites, and feel that the FCT is a great value. I've no issue with the "member's clubs" either, but note that although you usually receive a discount on purchases, you still have to pay for the item, and most payware sites are limited to a certain geographical region's locomotives or rolling stock, and usually content is not available for all versions of Trainz.

The DLS FCT gives you fast downloads for all versions of Trainz, all nations, all categories. Some is payware quality and most is not, but it's still a good value. In addition you are supporting the DLS and Trainz, without which all those payware sites are pretty well useless.

I'd rather support N3V and the Trainz franchise by buying an FCT, than being a "member" of a payware site any day. Of course, if I could justify doing both, than that would be fine as well, but I didn't get to be in the 1% club by spending money willy nilly!:D

No, eds one of the fellers because of his humour and re-skins

I suggest buying an FCT, as it keeps the servers for the DLS and FCT server up and running, and as RRSignal and mr onepercenter said,:hehe: it's really good value

Hello and yes of course I rememeber your name :)
I have returned after 6 years or so by purchasing the Anniversary box which includes a 12 month FCT.
I now have all TS10 content in TS12 and have updated it all through my FCT.
We are talking some 800/900 updated items here and some custom downlods as well.
Quite frankly, I am absolutely astounded at the speed (ADSL2+) and sheer volume of content that now greets me when using TRS12.
It took no more than 2 hours total to update ALL those items.
I am also the sort of person who sits there watching every single item dld.
As a matter of fact I played a game of look at previews of all content while it downloaded and the speed/list/window did in fact outpace me at times.

Sooo how do I feel about all this? Very very happy indeed to be back!

what is your speed of your internet.. i have 10mb down load,,,,

I just thought about another thing. I remember getting trainz classic and the pain of it not having all the content even for built-in routes. You had to install content from an older version or something like that to get it all working.

Would that still be the case with TS12? Like needing TS10 in order to get it going?

BTW I have cable internet. Don't know why it was so slow.

Not really. All the TS2010 content is available to TS12 users via the download station. The only real difference is that it's not installed by default.

do you know your speed,,, cablecan go from 1.5 mbps to 50 mbps..
i get around 10 to 16 mbps

This could be the amount of traffic in your neighborhood. Cable, or broadband internet, has multiple households sharing the same common network, and sharing the bandwidth. The problem is there are bandwidth hogs who download lots of movies, and will eat up the space that other people would like to use. The network will become slower and slower as the computers time out their connections and resend their packets over and over. This makes the network even slower as the computers are constantly retrying.

This is unlike the old DSL, which had a private copper connection directly to the network switch in the telco home office. In some ways this is better, although slower, depending upon how far you are from the home office where your network terminates before it's switched over to the larger more powerful trunks. This is better because the connection is consistent, slower due to distance because the signal is analog over the wires, and the signal attenuates as it gets farther away from its source.
