NoT tHe StAtUeS!
Trainz Simulator 2010, engineers edition. Am I the only one who didn't hear about this new installment of the game/new forum look? And is TRS2010 supposed to be like Trainz Driver, but with 09 standards?

I mean it's cool...but sometimes the design of this forum changes and I didn't know beforehand.:p

And is TRS2010 supposed to be like Trainz Driver, but with 09 standards?
From what is listed, it has full capabilities including Surveyor.
Now I would like to know if there are yet more new standards involved. Creators are still figuring out TS2009 standards and we're behind, if more things need learning it'll get ugly. So far the only new thing I see is SpeedTree and I have no idea if that means you get a version of it or just stuff made with it.
And can this be merged with TS2009WBE per the original plan?

I am still stunned myself by the look of the website when I logged on here this morning, as for trainz simulator 2010,we have to wait and see where this goes from here!

I simply hope that in 2010 edition all the old stuff that looks weirs now and days are taken out. But 1 thing i like to know, will the addon packs such as the settle and carlisle addon work in this new version of our beloved game ??

In with the new, out with the old!

I knew they would redo again, as 09 just had too many problems; just look at the post by those that try it! I hope 10 will not have the stupidity of 09! I still stick by 04 as the best. with they would take the 04 program and build from there. Again to the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! We will see from the reports that come in, wheather or not 10 is worth throwing money at, but I for one, still see no reason to buy new yet. And what is to happen with all the (09 only) assets they wanted people to make, is that out too now? Mine will allways be built in 04 so everyone can use them!

Auran released this recently: http://www.ts2010.com/

Backward Compatible with TS2009 Content
TS2010:EE will work out of the box with all content created for TS2009:WBE

Being new to Trainz, I purchased TS2009, and I have to say, I have had very little problems with it. But then, I have no idea how previous versions were, so I have nothing to compare with. Of course, I have to use Compatibility Mode to see trees properly, and I am waiting for the release of Treez on October 22nd. It also appear some previous features I would have preferred seem to have been removed in TS2009.

All in all, I am very pleased with my TS2009 experience. I wish some things were done differently when it comes to the interaction with Auran's Servers, but as far as the Driver and Surveyor parts are concerned, I am happy with my purchase.

I am going to wait on this one. Something tells me that those stupid animated trees are going to really destroy framerates.(The video that they posted seemed to be subtly lagging.) I just hope that this version still has compatability mode, as there are quite a few assets that aren't actually erroneous, even though they are claimed to be in error. Even new payware stuff has these "errors."

But yes, I am going to wait and see.

One has to wonder where is TS-x in all this?

That was originally the progression from TS2009 which was supposed to draw a line under the "legacy" versions and start afresh (at least that's how I interpreted it).

Will TS2010 include some of the features which have been asked for over the years - such as the ability to position and lay tunnels at any angle, proper AI despatcher etc. - or is it just the core of TS2009 with a few tweaks and extra content.

I ask the above as someone who is committed to using Trainz (well TRS2006 anyway) for route building but has in the past commented about Emperor's New Clothes etc. Otherwise I can see the comments from some of those less well disposed to Trainz, the inevitable comments about repackaging and reselling the same stuff, quick cash grab etc. Here we are again with the paint barely dry on TS2009, fairly pricey add-ons being waved under our nose such as S&C to get the TC3 content officially into TS2009 then along comes TS2010.

From the route creator's point of view it potentially means more non standard set ups to cater for, unless TS2010 includes all the legacy stuff from TS2009 there are numerous permutations as to what people may actually own when it comes to needing content to run a third party route.

I am wondering about the statement that TS2010 EE will have the "surveyor" module included. If I remember correctly it was supposed not to be so and therefore people had to buy TS2009 WBE.

Hi guys,

Just to answer a few of your questions:

From what is listed, it has full capabilities including Surveyor.

Correct.

Now I would like to know if there are yet more new standards involved. Creators are still figuring out TS2009 standards and we're behind, if more things need learning it'll get ugly.

We are adding some new features; if you want to take advantage of those features then you'll need to learn about them. Other than those, compatibility with TS2009 is absolute.

So far the only new thing I see is SpeedTree and I have no idea if that means you get a version of it or just stuff made with it.

TS2010 includes the ability to render SpeedTree assets directly; we are not simply building TS2009-style trees with the SpeedTree software. We are not providing a mechanism for content creators to create new SpeedTree trees, however we are supplying a library of pre-made trees.

And can this be merged with TS2009WBE per the original plan?

TS2010 (EE) is a complete upgrade from TS2009 (WBE). You will be able to install over the top of an existing TS2009 installation, however it is certainly not necessary to own TS2009 in order to use TS2010.

I simply hope that in 2010 edition all the old stuff that looks weirs now and days are taken out.

We are trying to avoid removing things that people might still be using, as doing that breaks compatibility with third-party routes and sessions. We are looking at ways to ensure that people who don't want the old stuff don't have to stare at long lists of it :)

But 1 thing i like to know, will the addon packs such as the settle and carlisle addon work in this new version of our beloved game ??

Absolutely!

That was originally the progression from TS2009 which was supposed to draw a line under the "legacy" versions and start afresh (at least that's how I interpreted it).

TS2010 Engineers Edition is much more than we planned to include in the original "TS2090 EE" concept, but it is not TSX.

Will TS2010 include some of the features which have been asked for over the years - such as the ability to position and lay tunnels at any angle, proper AI despatcher etc. - or is it just the core of TS2009 with a few tweaks and extra content.

It's a very polished version of the TS2009 codebase with some really shiny new features (layers, SpeedTree, seasonal assets.)

These products don't make themselves. Err too far on the budget side and we are "reselling the same stuff". Err too far on the other side and we are "overpriced". Personally, I'm very happy with what we've achieved in TS2010 but I guess that all depends on what you're looking for. I've already seen one forum post dismissing TS2010 because it doesn't include multiplayer :-)

TS2009 provided some really amazing enhancements for content creation, and while it's taken a while for people to understand the changes we're starting to see some really amazing stuff (check out TNM's or Jankvis' foliage as an example.)

In TS2010, we're focusing on content and gameplay rather than technology upgrades. That doesn't mean we've skimped on features - a lot of internal development work has gone into TS2009 to support the new content - but now that we've achieved a certain technology level for TS2009 we're happy not to push that further until content creation has fully caught up. The TS2010 features are about "adding new things" rather than "replacing outdated old things".

From the route creator's point of view it potentially means more non standard set ups to cater for, unless TS2010 includes all the legacy stuff from TS2009 there are numerous permutations as to what people may actually own when it comes to needing content to run a third party route.

Compatibility with TS2009 is absolute.

Something tells me that those stupid animated trees are going to really destroy framerates.(The video that they posted seemed to be subtly lagging.)

There's a reason that it's called "SpeedTree". It isn't because it's slow :-)

Yes, you put enough polygons on your screen and you'll eventually slow down. This is true of every version of Trainz, and always will be. But don't expect TS2010 to run notably slower than TS2009 on a similar scene.

The video was indeed lagging. Unfortunately the only machine that was available for taking the video (everybody else was busy) couldn't handle running alpha-quality software while capturing the video at the same time. It's a pre-release web video. Them's the breaks. I'm sure we'll get you something nicer to look at before release :-)

I just hope that this version still has compatability mode, as there are quite a few assets that aren't actually erroneous, even though they are claimed to be in error. Even new payware stuff has these "errors."

Well, they are erroneous, otherwise there wouldn't be any error reported. The errors may or may not be serious, but that's a whole different discussion.

But yes, compatibility mode still exists for dealing with older assets.

Chris,

Where is the Multiplayer feature of Trainz that Tony promissed?

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I'm pretty sure that nobody has promised that EE would include multiplayer. It was originally intended as a Driver-only version of Trainz (similar to our other add-on packs) but with more content. Once it became clear that we wouldn't be able to get any interesting content in the original timeframe, we extended the scope of the project to allow other features such as SpeedTree et al. and to be a full product in its own right rather than requiring TS2009 WBE for Surveyor access.

In other words the buyers of TS2009 were lied to.
