TRS2010 vs. TRS2012?

I've been lurking on here for a while now. I used to play TRS2004 a few years ago but with all the new quality content I'm seeing in the screenshots thread, I'm thinking I might buy one of the newer versions of Trainz. My question is what are the notable differences between TRS2010 vs TRS2012? I know 2012 has multiplayer but that really isn't a big deal to me. Is 2012 really worth the extra 20 dollars?

No, and the new DRM requires a "periodically on" internet connection unless you get your hands on a pre-SP1 version.

The quality of the content has improved, but mostly because people are expecting better quality. I can't speak for TRS2004, but TS2009 was capable of just as great quality as 10 or 12; it's just the content available when it came out wasn't quite up to the standards we have today.
 
TS2010 has Compatibility Mode for older content if you avoid te Multiplayer Beta. I also think it is slightly less buggy than TS12, especially since SP1.

TS12 has no Compatibility Mode but apparently runs better than TS2010 which is not what I've observed on my computer.

TS12 worth the extra $20? I'm not inclined to believe so, but then again only one route really interests me and that's the ECML.

Of course, others will say the complete opposite to me and you will listen to them. :P

TRS2010 also has multiplayer, if multiplayer is not your interest, but keeping some of your older content is, then TRS2010 gives you
the option of 'Compatibility' mode, something that TS12 hasn't got.

The answer is always the same, do your own research and make your own decision.
 
If you don't care about multiplayer and would like compatibility for older items go for TRS2010 but don't update it beyond build 44088.

You might get a small window poping up when you load it, telling you your Trainz version is out of date and an update is available, but don't worry about it, just close the popup and carry on.

Whatever you go for just make sure your computer can handle it or you will be disappointed with the result.
 
TS10 is less buggy than non TS12 SP1

TS12 SP1 fixes a lot of those bugs and introduces others, it also introduces a whole lot of other issues re-content some for the better a lot for the worst.

Or you could pick up the 'Just Trains' dvd version from Amazon or EBay (making sure it's a NEW copy & not a USED one) &
save a small amount.

The 'Just Trains' dvd uses the same patches as the N3v version.

G'day, my TS10 is patched to 49933 is non multiplayer, has compatibility mode and runs quite well in either mode. TS12 is OK but a bit buggy and the service pack and hot fixes have done little to improve it for me.

I don't have 10 but I will say this about 12, which disappoints me a bit. I have a powerful cpu and video card and even at only 2xAAA and no 3d sound and draw distance down to 1000m I get jumpy frames (Mojave scenario), not sure if 10 is like this but if it isn't than I would go with 10. Note the stuttering is only when viewing the train track side, in the cab is ok but I like to watch the loco whip buy.

Weren't those fun days? Back then I was firmly in the '04 camp, mainly due to hardware limitations. I was in the same position as the OP w short while ago. I wanted to get back into the game and was deciding on which version. Since hardware was not an issue this time, I went for the most current version, figuring it would be playable longer. I went for the Anniversary edition and I'm glad I did. There have been some issues of course with the patches and stuff, and some of my favorite old content is no longer usable, but I prefer to look forward instead of back. TS12 works great for me, but I do understand a lot of people can't say that.

Definitely do your research, read these forums but remember everyone had different experiences, their hardware will also have an effect and some people will have agendas for or against certain thngs. Shak it all out and see what you get.

Yeah, Zec Murphy himself confirmed it in this post last night.

he DLC system may require you to be online to verify your purchases every so often (I have yet to test this out myself), but it's still not an always online function. That's not to say it won't change in future, but at this stage there is no requirement to be always online.

What's not 100% clear is whether the new DLC validation system validates the program itself, but it doesn't stand to reason that N3V would go to the trouble and expense of coding a DRM system, purchasing DRM authentication servers, etc. just to leave the program itself out. In any case, Zec's last sentence leaves open the possibility that N3V's DRM system will become more restrictive in the future.

FWIW, N3V's new system is even more strict than Steam's DRM; with Steam, you go online once to validate, but, once done, you can go and stay in Offline Mode. But, now, TS12 SP1 must periodically go online to validate your install with N3V.
