Treez?

OK, I downloaded Treez, did the install bit and now I have TS2009_Treez build 40702 on my hard drive.

I start Trainz and the Content button doesn't work. Tried to launch Content Manager directly but nothing happens.

So I click start and there is no Surveyor, it's grayed out. Driver only has a Demo route.

I didn't find a readme file so now what? Did I miss a turnout somewhere? How do I get these Treez into my existing routes? :o

I backed up my current build 38599 before install. It still works normally. Should I have told Treez to install in here instead?

When I installed mine I had the same version number you now have. When I clicked on Content, CM2 started to run "Repairing Database" (what ever).

This may also be why you are having a problem, CM2 needs to rebuild the Database. This took some time, may be 10 minutes or so.

If only. Since CM2 40702 doesn't even start, kind of hard to do any repair.

It sounds as though you have installed it as a standalone rather than adding to TS2009.

Not that I remember having any choice. When I clicked on the installer, it wanted to install in TS2009_Treez. Should I have pointed it to my TS2009 folder? Too bad it didn't ask or make that option clear.

So then I decided to start TS2009, just to make sure it was still working. Normally I'm doing a lot of content work so CM2 is first started and then Trainz launched from within CM2. This time I went straight to the Launcher and lo and behold, it said a patch was available and did I want to run it now. No information on exactly what it was but since I had made a back up of the whole TS2009 in preparation for Treez, I let it go ahead. It's been working all night and day, searching, downloading, unpacking and now patching. My Zone Alarm sometimes stops it, asking if I approve the next move, so it is taking longer than normal since I'm not always around to answer.

Once it is finished, we'll see about the Treez situation.

While in the Treez demo I could help but noticing that many of the Treez look rather cartoony rather than real trees, compared to some of the latest creations from JVC. Perhaps this is more an issue with the selection rather than the overall quality. Some looked like a recent photo from Madagascar and their Baobab trees which do look rather cartoony compared to say maples or oaks. But thats only me and my perception

Same problem here well more or less as I did point it to the trainz folder however I failed to notice it had added a bit on the end so it got installed as a stand alone in a sub folder, running the setup again failed as it didn't give me any option at all so I ran regedit and deleted anything that refered to treez and then was able to point the installer to the 2009 folder however make sure you edit the entry to remove everything after TS2009 otherwise it will end up in a sub folder again.
Clear Instructions were somewhat missing and I fear a lot will get caught out by this.

OK to fix it ... if you don't fancy messing with the registry......... I have several installs of Trainz, two on the one PC so I just copied the contents of the treez folder into the TS2009 folder for my number 2 install started CM2 and did an extended database repair which took a couple of hours and all is well, may be advisable to back up your local folder first just in case though. Alternatively you could just add you 2009 local folder to the Treez install and again do the database repair.

The Treez. well I think jankvis and TNM's are better looking and I see that a few of them are suffering from the draw distance leaves vanishing problem, the worst is that big or giant tree or whatever its supposed to be, it vanished or perhaps wandered off somewhere? in about 300 metres!! most are ok though ;)

I'll give em 6 out of 10 for the treez and 1 out of 10 for the installer.

The patching finished and now I'm at TS2009 SP1 (40040)

When I tried running Treez again, it says an existing but older Trainz version has been detected. I have to up date or install Treez as a separate installation.

40040 is not new enough?
If it is seeing some of the older back ups, how do I point it to the current version? There is no destination path dialog box.

I have the same problem although I'm runnning 40088. I'll try uninstalling & reinstalling up to 40040 some time this weekend and see if that helps.....

Treez are finally planted

Well it has been a long and winding road but Treez are finally planted. :)

First I uninstalled TS2009_Treez and then removed all references to treez from the registry (Vista 64)

Then during the subsequent install when it was proposing to again create a TS2009_Treez version on my C: drive, I told it to go to another drive and pointed it to the folder where I have TS2009 installed. When it was finished, TS2009 was now at 40702.

After a database repair I went in a planted a copy of every tree in a new map.

The demo had really left me wondering why I got it but now having seen every tree and bush, they look pretty good. The scintillating effect in the distance gives a nice impression of wind movement.

Some of the LOD transitions are still rather startling. You have this sudden jump from one level to the next. It would be nice if there could be a slower fade in and fade out. Also, most of the Treez Foliage Shrub group appear to get bigger in the transition to a lower LOD. :(

Some of the insertion points of major branches on some of the larger trees could do with some refinement. They really look like something nailed on rather than something that grew there. The Treez Old series as an example.

Many of the bark textures are really superb, Treez Giantwood and Treez Maple and Treez Oak.

My rating:
Visually, 8/10, looks good with a few rough edges :D
LOD 7/10, the transitions still need some work :)
Installation 2/10, not sure how typical I am but I think the average computer user might not be able to easily overcome the installation peculiarities :(

I just renamed my TS2009 folder, and installed again. Patched to 40040, and the Treez installed just fine this time. Then copied my local folder from my backup & restored the database, and all was good.
