Trees

This is hard to describe, but here goes...most of the trees in Trainz2009 are comprised of flat planes put together around a common intersecting trunk center. This becomes apparent when viewed from certain angles, but isn't really a problem. But what I do find annoying is that even though the background behind the individual plane is mostly transparent, it blocks out splines - including rails. So if you're looking from the right angle, the track or road or fence or other tree splines behind it disappears, creating gaps that spoils the effect. The default "tree" doesn't have this, but I'd obviously like to be able to use more than one kind of tree!

I do have a screen cap that shows this, but I'm not able to post it here without a URL...and I'm not interested in signing up for any of those picture sharing sites just for this. I'd be happy to email it to anyone who needs to see it to help.

Is this just the way it works? Or is there a rendering issue or bug involved? I'm running on a Dell Vostro laptop, which I know isn't optimal, but it does pretty darn well otherwise. I'm patched up to SP3 (holding off on 4 given the bugs reported).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi Ray,

How would I do that? I'm somewhat new to Trainz and still learning all the little settings that make a difference. I only just learned that changing to DirectX would make the water features ripple!

Thanks!

Gordon

OOps- I just edited out a detailed reply which missed the fact that you are in TS09, wherein none of my reply was relevant.

There is no 'Comp Mode' in 09 so you are stuck with the transparency issues. 09 was (IMHO) a bit of a marketing ploy wherein we all screamed blue murder about the trees and got ourselves stuck with 3D trees as a reward. Get yourself a copy of TS10....

Well, thanks for the effort, Andy! :)

The default "Tree" is fine (and there are some pines but I don't recall the names off the top of my head) - are there any other trees / brush / shrubs / bushes made the same way that can be downloaded from Download Station or through Content Manager? You really can't tell what you're going to get from the thumbnails, so maybe someone can recommend something from experience?

Failing that, can I upgrade to 2010 without having to buy a whole new fricking program just to get nice trees?

Thanks!

I know a few people are running my East Kentucky 3 route in TS09 and seem happy enough with the trees. The trees used are Trunda's and are imho pretty close to the best billboard trees ever done. Get them here and here...

Did i miss or read something wrong? The version I had of TS2009 had comp mode.

I'm getting old - was there? I uninstalled 09 long time ago, but wasn't the big issue with 09 the fact that trees were transparent and there was no fix? I thought Comp/Native was a 10 innovation?

As Malc said 2009 definately has compatabilty mode. Main Menu, Options, Video Settings. Here you adjust draw distance etc and there is a check box called 'Enable compatability mode for older content'. Check this box then close and restart 2009 for this option to be implemented. To switch back to native mode uncheck and restart.
Depending on the computer, compatability mode can reduce frame rates compared to native mode. There are some trees on the DLS which are made for native mode, for example those made by Jankvis with ~ symbol in the title.

Thanks guys. I found the compatibility mode and it did indeed solve the problem with the trees. The frame rate does seem to have dropped, so I guess it's a trade-off! Maybe I'll play with draw distance and such and see if that helps. I'll also look for those other trees.

Thanks for your help!

Dangerously off topic!

Yep 2009 definitely has compatibility mode.

Not arguing and stand humbly corrected, but was there always a comp mode in 09 or was it a SP4 addition to bring it in line with TS10? I never installed SP4 and in fact uninstalled TRS09 about 10 seconds after I installed TS10 but for the life of me I can't remember a 'Comp Mode' in TRS09. Either that or I really am getting old...

I used 09 for a while and now have been using 10 for the last 6 months or so. I believe any trees in question would act or behave the same in both. 10 had the speed tree library installed hence allowing the use of speedtreez. As far as older billboard trees I think they perform the same in comp or native mode between the 09 and 10 Trainz versions.

Content Manager Issue

This may need to be moved to a different board or as a new thread, but since the past comments on this one chronicle the changes I made to my Trainz 2009 recently, it may provide clues as to a new problem I've noticed. I don't believe I had this before I posted the original question.

When I go to download a file or files using the in-program Content Manager, I get the progress bar over the name as usual and it moves across to the completed position, but stops. The file is not downloaded and it just sits there. When there are multiple files, it does not move on to the next file as before.

My Internet connections are all the same as when it was working, so I don't believe that's it. It happens regardless of what kind of file I try to download - both with and without dependencies.

I would appreciate it if some of you more experienced folks could look at the previous posts in this thread and tell me if you see something that might explain this. Or if there is some other possible cause. And, if it would be better to cross-post to a more appropriate board, please tell me which one and I'll try there.

Many thanks!!
