TANE will run on a computer that is not permanently connected to the Internet, it just needs to contact the servers once per month (or similar). This is the DRM argument that periodically flares up in these forums every now and again - I wouldn't call it a "war". There is a DRM free version but that was only available to those who were supporters of the Kickstarter project.
Regardless of whether or not you are connected to the Internet or which version you have, the T:ANE icon should appear on your timeline.
