Transdem & Google Earth

How can I add Google Earth images to a route made in Tranzdem? The route is already made in Transden but I'm having problems with getting the track accurate, so I thought if I made a image of the area I want and go back and add it to Transdem map and then I could just follow the tracks to get it right. Any help would be appreciated.

One technique that I have been using which, so far, works is to use the Path feature of Google Earth to draw a line along the path of the track. Using more path segments increases the accuracy of the result.

Then save the completed path as a .kmz (a Google Earth format) file. TransDem can import .kmz files in its Route menu. You can set TransDem to convert the path line to a track asset of your choosing so the completed baseboard map in Trainz will have the track already laid for you. A bit of tweaking in Surveyor will still be needed.

Its all covered in the TransDem Trainz manual.

Use the Map Tile client in TransDEM. Sketch the course of your route on a map in TransDEM, then let the Map Tile client acquire the images from Google Maps or Microsoft Bing(formerly Virtual Earth) along this path. (You may have to update the version number in the Map Tile URL string for Google). Let TransDEM create UTM tiles along this path and add them to the route.

It's the quickest way, making full use of TransDEM features.

Thanks Geophil that worked slicker than **** well you know what I mean. Took me a while but I finally got it to download images for the route. Ok now when I pick icon to create it comes up with the yellow warning and I say go ahead and the box opens. I'm not sure how to set it up, but when I try to use the pick list of routes there is only one route in the list switch is not mine and it will not let me type in the box. Where too now? Thanks again for the help. P.S. hopefully this wont mess up my route, I would hate to start over.

Where does the "Trainz Custom Content Folder" point to in TransDEM? (main menu, Options | Settings | Trainz Global Export Parameters)

It must point to the same location to which Trainz will export the route when "opened for edit" in Content Manager ("editing" or "UserData\editing").

The only difference is the one on this screen shows another folder at the end switch is scenery.'' C:\Users\Donald\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE\editing'' The one with scenery is grayed out so I cant change it to show the same. Hope this helps.

The question still remains: Is that folder the one T:ANE is actually using? In case you relocated the user data root in T:ANE, T:ANE Content Manager might work with that new location. And TransDEM needs to follow, but you have to set this manually in TransDEM, in that Settings dialog. The "scenery" subfolder is the one where TransDEM is putting the UTM tiles. When committing the changes in Content Manager - after TransDEM has created the UTM tiles - you also have to import these tile assets into Trainz.

I hope that the envisaged "Trainz Native Interface" will offer features which enable me to simplify the interaction between Content Manager and TransDEM.

No haven't changed anything. The one in my last post is the one in Transdem settings, so is the import going to make that scenery folder when it moves the files and if so it still isn't giving me the ok bottom. It is grayed out. Can I change them to 3d or leave at 2d? Map name shows nothing and layer name is grayed out to. I am totally lost at this point. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

The "scenery" sub-folder is implicit. TransDEM will create it, if it does not exist.

But TransDEM also needs to access the route itself, to place the UTM tiles at the correct location.

Routes opened for edit in T:ANE Content Manager will receive a composite folder name. The KUID will precede the route name, something like
"kuid 126773 100009 My New Route". (You have opened the route for edit in Content Manager?)

2D or 3D tiles is something should try out yourself. 2D are faster to create, but, as the name implies, they are flat. 3D tiles follow the terrain and are easier to work with in Surveyor.

Ok it look like everything worked that time, but when I go into the route there is nothing there. I got no errors so how do I know it worked ok? Thanks

In Content Manager, did you import the UTM tiles, newly created by TransDEM? From the scenery folder?

The whole procedure is described step by step in the TransDEM Trainz manual, as one chapter of the Muengsten tutorial.
