Transdem for route creation

I've made a route over a few years of Tasmania however it's not to scale and I've recently discovered transdem and I would like to use this to create a Tasmanian route if that's possible?

Now I don't know a lot about it but would anyone be willing to help me start out and gain a better understanding of it please.

I think it would be a good way to create a accurate route.

Thanks Bradley

I'd be happy to be involved, I have just started the EBR line from Burnie to Rosebery, will go beyond there to Melba Junction later, Have pretty well finished track work in Bunie yard, Sation and Wharf

To download DEM data

Here's another site, but I haven't ever been able to download data from! I use this site only to obtain filename information
makes it a lot easier to find the filename for the .hgt file and then import the DEM into TransDEM https://dwtkns.com/srtm30m/

The links work. You need to create an account with NASA at the https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/

Once this login is created, the srtm data are easily downloaded. The other place you can download srtm data and maps is Earth Explorer.

You will also need to create an account here to access the information. This has a gui that's fairly easy to use. I used this to download information on Bermuda when I was interested in building the Bermuda Railway which became a dead ended project at the time.

Warning. These are government sites and are convoluted and confusing as most government websites are as they attempted to make them easier to use!

For creating prototypical routes, TransDem is your friend. When you first start, it can be rather over whelming so have a look at some tutorials
Try this one,
Once you've gone through and understand it, try a simple route first, just to get a feel for how it all works.

Here is a use for TransDEM that I fool around with. One of my interests is volcanos, and where I live (Oregon, USA) there are many. I use TransDEM to create realistic volcanos for use as background of a fictional route I am working on. What works best are volcanos on their own small islands. There are many near Japan, Kamchatka, Aleutians, etc. and are easy to find using Google Earth. It's best to not use any island that is too big, or you will exceed your draw distance, unless of course your main part of the fictional route is actually on a volcanic island. The merge route feature of Trainz makes it easy to merge a route of just the volcano into the route you are working on.

Nice idea!
