You can run them both at the same time if you have enough processor and GPU:hehe:

But actually yes they each install to their own directory. I know people that have every version of Trainz on their PCs.

Now on to your second question which might be a little stickier. If the content would run in native mode in 2010 without error it will run in TS 12.

If the content you have is built strictly for 2006 and has not been updated, chances are if you try to import that you're going to see a lot of faulty content. Now that doesn't mean that updates aren't available on the DLS, and it doesn't mean that the asset cannot be fixed by the end-user.

Basically what happened was that all versions prior to 2010 there were guidelines for content creation but no real rules. With 2010 Auran/N3V decided to implement some rules. They did however leave a compatibility mode option in 2010 so that older faulty content would still run. There is no compatibility mode in TS12. The reason being is multiplayer, you can't have one or two people in a multiplayer session running compatibility mode and two or three not running compatibility mode because that messes up a whole host of things and people don't see certain assets when other people do etc.

There is a project underway now where older assets are being fixed and updated to be native mode and if they can't be their being delete from what I understand. I know they're being fixed and there was talk about the deletions and I'm just not sure about that part.

I haven't found an asset yet that I haven't been able to fix to make it work in TS12. If you use PEV's set of tools you can fix practically any asset to work in native mode.

Hi,

I have been thinking of buying ts12 but there is a lot of discontent about this latest release, what with compatibility issues and the need to update old assets using PEV's tools. A lot of work if you don't mind fiddling with files.

I suggest you read more as I am doing before you dive in and buy it after all a fool and his money are soon parted.

There's not a lot of discontent with TS12. These are the usual naysayers making a big stink about every new version, and tell everyone to go to RailWorksless because it's so much better.

If you've been using TS2010, and decide to go TS12, you'll love the difference. So many things are better. The AI seem "smarter", the draw distance is better, and the performance is much better. There are a lot of subtle differences too in the interface, and other things all over the place that'll make you smile when you start using it.

In general you should update your content to native compatibility anyway. This has the benefits in the long run. There's no need to worry about fixing a lot of content yourself anyway. There's a project going on with Auran to fix the "older" stuff anyway that's on the DLS, and this will upgrade anything you have installed to the newer version anyway.

Thanks John I really couldn't of said it better myself.

It does make it hard trying to correct misinformation that seems to be being systematically put on the forum by a few people. I don't know what their motives are but the last couple of weeks they seem to have gotten a second wind and have been a little bit more vocal spreading their misinformation.

Now I may not always be 100% correct, but I try to be as correct as possible. Are there things that need to be fixed in TS12? Yes there are. Is everything fixed in 2004 through 2010? No they are not:hehe:

When I see things like the poster you replied to quoting almost verbatim something that I've seen a few of these other posters posting, it just makes me want to quit the forums again and go off and do my own thing. It's not like I haven't done it before:D

But PEV's tools aren't strictly for TS12, but you won't hear many of the naysayers mention that fact, they'll never mentioned that his tools fix assets all the way back to 2004. I feel that if you're not willing to fix assets that you need to make a determination not to use the asset. If you really want to use the asset you should be willing to do what little it takes to make it work.

But us older Trainz users realize that, and I really don't know why it seems there is a whole new crop of users that are just expecting everything to work right out of the box and that's really never been present in any release that I can think of.

There was one guy that made a comment that TS12 was the worst software experience he's had 35 years, to which I replied "I guess you've never run a Microsoft operating system in the last 35 years?":hehe:

Now keep in mind this guy had two badges, TS12 and UTC :hehe:

So I think I'm able to discern where that anger was coming from.

Hi,

I can vouch for PEV's tools as I have had to use them on content I have downloaded for use in ts2010. These tools are to be appreciated for without them things would be a lot different.
I always try to find out all I can about a program I am interested in warts and all.
