After some major PC problems I am unable to launch my version of Trainz, no problem I thought, all I have to do is re-install.. BUT.. I have downloaded many items and I do not want to go throught that again !

Can you tell me which file(s) to `save` so I can transfer them to a clean install of the game ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Chairman,

Welcome to the forums! I hope we can be of some help here.

Depending upon the version of Trainz you are using, there are different things to backup.

For TRS2004 and before, you want to backup your World/Dispatcher/Downloads directory, and any other directory there such as local, and user content. I can't remember the folders exactly because it's been awhile since I used TRS2004.

For TRS2006, Classics and TS2009, backup your Local folder.

For TRS2010 things get a little different.
Backup your:

Local and Original directories (I can't remember if the Original exists prior to SP1). For SP1 and before, the setup is similar to TS2009. For SP2 and later, they are located under the Userdata directories.

Beware. There is a lot of data here depending how much you have downloaded.

Hope this helps. The others here may remember more of the details than I can at the moment because I'm not at my Trainzing PC.

Sorry to hear about your disc going south! :(

Your FCT will be fine. Reinstalling the program has nothing to do with your FCT.

When your disc comes in, let us know and we'll help you with your data import into the new copy.

@ JCitron,

New edition of game arrived (deluxe 3 disc set), installed TRS2006 onto PC.. presume I just transfer my `local` file over to new version ?

Will wait for reply as I don`t want it all to crash around my ears [again] !

The transfer of data is very easy to do.

Open up your CM (Content Manager).

On the file menu, choose Import Content....

Browse to where you put your old data,

Open up any folder if needed.

Click Open. (You will not see any data, just the parent folder).

The process will take some time. You may also be prompted about overwriting content. Click No to all.

Let the process run. When it is done, you will need to commit the assets to the database.

Select all of the items in the window. (Ctrl A).

Press Ctrl M to commit.

This process too can take some time.

When done, repair the database.

This too is under the file menu and there are two options.
Quick Repair which isn't so quick, and Extended Repair, which takes quite some time.

When the process is done, apply any patches necessary and you should be all set to go.

Good luck.

Hi John,

Couldn`t get the `saved` assets to load into the new copy due to "Access error". Anyway, I`m just glad I`ve got a working copy !

Time to head back to the DLS and start over again :'(

Thankyou for all your help in this...

Sorry to hear this, Harry.

You're welcome anyway.

Are you getting the Access Error from TS, or from Windows? What version of Windows are you running?
If it's from Windows, you may need to change permissions for the folder(s).

Oh, and didn't I read that you already copied the old Local folder into the new install?
If you did that, it is probably what is causing your problem. You are trying to install content into the same folder as its source. You should be leaving the old Local folder separate, then doing the import into the new install.
