Trainz will no longer load my route

I have a large true to scale prototypical route I have been working on on-and-off for several years. Recently it has been more off than on, as these days I get to play with 12" to 1ft scale trains.

I found recently that Trainz will not load the route.
  1. The 4 squares are still active, the route does not load, even after several hours.
  2. It will not shut down unless I use Task Manager to kill the task.
  3. Task Manager shows zero disk activity.
  4. I re-installed from the latest back-up cdp file, no difference.
  5. Previous versions, still installed, also do not load.
  6. It is not my username, my other smaller routes - mainly for testing specific features - still load and work normally.
  7. Other large built-in routes - ECML - still load and work normally
  8. Large DLS routes - Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland and GCR22 V3 - also still works normally.
The only other option is to delete Trainz entirely, re-download the base game, reinstall the route from the back-up cdp, redownload all the dls content.

Unless anybody has any other ideas?

Edit: Trainz version 126280, HP Omen Gaming Laptop, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz; Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.88 GB usable); Windows 11 Home Version 23H; OS Build 22631.4169

Have you tried an Extended Database Repair?

Press CTRL while selecting Rebuild database.

The process can take a long time. When the process has completed, open up Content Manager. Open up the Faulty assets view.

Highlight any of the assets in there and view errors and warnings. The results should be 0 errors and a bunch of warnings.

You may have to exit that view, by changing to Installed and then going back to refresh. If there are any assets left, right-click again and view those errors and warnings to clean up any remaining ones.

With the database cleared up, start TRS22 or whatever flavor you are running. If you see something about continuing or reverting when you open up your route, choose revert, or whatever that option is - I seriously can't remember.

Outside of something being corrupted in Trainz, I hope not, how much disk space do you have? Trainz requires a lot not only for backups but also to load the route.

Thanks John.

Tried that but with no success. It's not the disk space issue, as I have 81.4GB free, also other large routes, both built-in and DLS load and run normally.

As I have cdp back-ups of the route and session, and any non-dls dependencies, I will go with the delete Trainz and re-download.

Any advice on removing the base programme completely?

You have two folders for Trainz, the program folder which the shortcut seeks out, and the data folder where all data is stored and is shown in the path window of your Trainz settings/install. Trainz deletion will delete only the program folder. There is no automated deletion of the data folder.
If your route was last saved in an older version of Trainz it might be bringing all the assets up to date for the latest version. The way Trainz saves is different to previous ones.

Hi,
Just a thought - what version of Trainz did you use to create the route? If you’ve updated Trainz versions, you may need to load into (say) ts2006, export CDP, load into TS2009, export CDP etc.
In the process some of the built-in assets may no survive….

Sometimes, things become corrupted in weird ways even with the backups there's no way of opening up a route. I've had luck by merging the affected route into a blank baseboard. For some reason, this clears the error and resets whatever was causing the problem.

Would you mind sharing the route for us to take a look at? Don't worry about dependencies. We can gather up those if we need them.

Link to download the route. I think this also has all my non-dls dependencies.

I also remember now having an update to the Trainz base program, from version 119450 to 126280. There was not enough disk space to perform this update, so I deleted a lot of duplicate files (outside of Trainz) before I could install the update. It seems to be after this update that the route no longer loads.

(Edit to add) The route was working in TRS22/Plus SP3.

Your route crashed on me also. I wouldn't give up on the route yet and try one more thing. It's a possibility that it's one of your dependencies and the only way to find out is to use the process of elimination.

In Content Manager, get the dependencies of your route.

Sort the dependencies by status.
Disable all but your built-in and DLC content you have used on your route.

Once that's done, open your route in Surveyor.
If it loads, then it's something that's not built-in or DLC. Simple as that.

Close the route and go back to Content Manager.
Enable a handful of non-DLC and built-in content. I usually do about 100 assets at a time.
Repeat the test again in Surveyor. If the route loads, go back and enable another 100 assets, repeat, rinse, wash, and repeat until the route hangs.

When it hangs, go back into Content Manager and disable the last batch you enabled where the hang occurred. Why there are only100 assets are enabled at a time.

Open the route again in Trainz to test if it's still working.

Go back into Content Manager and enable only a few assets from the same batch you just disabled and test again. Rinse, wash, and repeat this until you've narrowed down the bugger.

Thanks, John. That would explain why previous versions of the route still installed also don't work, as well as the current back-up of the latest version.

Will check and let you know how I get on.

No joy with that. I deleted (after making a cdp backup) all my custom content, disabled all dls content, disabled all packaged content, even disabled all builtin, leaving just the base content active.

No joy...

This is the same with a "Version 6" which is still installed, the current version is V13. I made a new version after terrain updates, other updates were backed-up to cdp.

I downgraded the version from 5.2 to 4.6, the route and session starts in 10 seconds with TS19. Unfortunately, I do not know how to make it work with TS22.

Downgraded to 4.6 version: https://sharemods.com/eu9zptlfjhwi/content-archive-4.6.zip.html

Thanks to all who have replied.
I can "Open in explorer" from CM, so can change the version from there. However I'm not holding out much hope as, as previously mentioned, the V6 - which has not been touched since before upgrading to TRS22 - will also not open.
I'm away playing with 12" / 1 ft trains until Saturday, will report back then.

I tried to "Edit Route" with the 4.6 version in TRS22PE and it just sat there and spun. I left it for several hours with no result. I finally killed it in Task Mangler.

I downloaded all the dependencies from DLS to version 4.3 in TS19, with the exception of

ones. Then I deleted all the missing ones through the surveyor and saved them as 5.0.

This is what it looks like this in TC19:

It also now works in TS22 and it looks like this, with no dependencies at all:

You can install the route and session in TS19, with all the dependencies, then delete all the missing ones in the surveyor and it should work in TS22.

This is what I got without unknown dependencies and it works with TS22:

Disabling assets only keeps you from adding them to route in surveyor. It will still appear in routes or sessions if is already been added. He should delete small groups of dependencies then test.
